About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

An ivory chasuble worked almost entirely tone on tone, with a crowned Marian monogram in blue as the single note of colour, a ring of gold stars, white lilies and fleur-de-lys in gold and pale silver. The restrained Marian vestment in the collection.

01

The embroidery

There is no contrasting orphrey band. The panel is marked out by two lines of fine gold piping, and everything inside it is stitched in ivory, warm gold and silver-grey against the ivory ground, so it reads as texture and shadow rather than as a picture.

At the top a gold crown rests over the interlaced A and M of the Marian monogram, the one element worked in blue. An arc of gold stars spreads beneath it, then a spray of white and gold lilies, a pair of fleur-de-lys, and a lozenge outlined in small beads enclosing a silver fleur-de-lys. A foliate scroll closes the panel at the hem. The back is plain, with the same monogram worked small and tone on tone at the neck.

02

Liturgical use

Ivory belongs to the white class. This chasuble is made first for Marian feasts and devotions — the Immaculate Conception, the Assumption, the Nativity of Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary, the Marian Saturdays, and the May and October devotions — and is equally correct at Christmas and Easter, on feasts of Our Lord, and at weddings and ordinations.

It is not worn in Advent or Lent, which call for violet, at Pentecost or in Holy Week, which call for red, or in Ordinary Time, which calls for green.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms to a rounded hem, with no fastening. The cloth is a smooth ivory with a soft, low-sheen finish; the panel and the whole hem are outlined with fine gold piping, and the embroidery is stitched into the ground rather than applied as a patch.

04

Sizing and made to measure

Take one of the four graded standard sizes from the size guide on this page, or choose Made to Measure and send us your own figures — height, chest, waist and the front length you want. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

Care

Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner the garment carries metallic-thread embroidery.

  • Light and heat are what turn ivory cloth yellow. Keep it in a closed garment bag or vestment press, out of daylight and away from radiators.
  • Handle it with clean dry hands. Ivory shows finger marks and candle wax more readily than any other liturgical colour.
  • Hang it on a broad padded hanger and press only from the reverse, with a cloth between the iron and the vestment.

FAQs

Before you order

Which days is this chasuble made for?

Marian days first: the Immaculate Conception, the Assumption, the Nativity of Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary and the other Marian feasts, and the May and October devotions.

Ivory belongs to the white class, so it is equally correct at Christmas and Easter, on feasts of Our Lord, and at weddings, ordinations and Masses of thanksgiving. It is not worn in Advent or Lent, at Pentecost, or in Ordinary Time.

What is the interlaced monogram under the crown?

It is the Marian monogram, an A and an M woven together beneath a crown, worked here in blue against the ivory ground. The letters are read as Ave Maria, or as Auspice Maria, under the protection of Mary; the crown marks her Queenship.

Around it a ring of gold stars recalls the crown of twelve stars in Revelation 12, and the white lilies below stand for purity.

How does this compare with your blue velvet Marian chasuble?

This is the restrained one. The orphrey is ivory on ivory, marked out with fine gold piping rather than a contrasting band, and the only strong colour is the blue of the monogram itself. It sits quietly under a stone vault and photographs softly.

The blue velvet Marian chasuble is the fuller statement, with a royal blue velvet orphrey running collar to hem, a velvet standing collar and embroidered velvet cuff bands. Choose that one for a patronal solemnity, this one for the Marian Saturdays and the May devotions.

Is the embroidery coloured, or all in ivory?

Mostly tone on tone. The lilies, the fleur-de-lys and the scrollwork are worked in ivory, warm gold and pale silver-grey against the ivory ground, so they read as texture and shadow rather than as a picture. The monogram in blue is the single note of colour, which is what draws the eye to it.

It is a quieter effect in person than a photograph suggests. If you want the whole panel worked in stronger gold, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes.

Should I choose Standard Size or Made to Measure?

A standard size chosen on height suits most wearers, since a chasuble is wide and unfastened. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges or want a particular hem length. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How do I keep an ivory vestment from yellowing?

Light and heat are what turn ivory cloth yellow, and a vestment kept for feast days spends most of the year in storage, which is where it happens. Keep it in a closed garment bag or vestment press, out of daylight and away from radiators, on a broad padded hanger.

Dry clean only, and handle it with clean dry hands: ivory shows finger marks and candle wax more readily than any other liturgical colour. Press only from the reverse, with a cloth between the iron and the cloth.
