Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

Navy satin stole with a large embroidered medallion of a descending dove over rainbow rays and a small gold cross. For baptisms, confirmations, weddings and other services centred on the Holy Spirit.

Symbolism

The descending dove is the standard sign of the Holy Spirit, drawn from the Gospel accounts of Christ's baptism. The rainbow behind it recalls God's covenant after the flood in Genesis. Together they read as a stole about the Spirit's presence rather than about one fixed day in the calendar.

Details

About this stole

This is a contemporary stole in navy satin-look cloth, with a large embroidered medallion near the top of each panel: a white dove descending over multicolour rainbow rays, and a small gold cross set below it. Below the medallion, each panel runs plain to a border of gold fringe.

01

Design and symbolism

The medallion is the whole design here - there is no running border or second motif further down the panel, just plain navy satin with gold piping at the edge. The dove descending is the standard sign of the Holy Spirit, drawn from the Gospel accounts of Christ's baptism, and the rainbow behind it recalls God's covenant with Noah after the flood in Genesis. A small gold cross sits beneath the dove, keeping the design anchored to Christ rather than reading as a general symbol on its own.

02

Liturgical use

Navy is not one of the Roman rite's core liturgical colours, and where blue does appear in Western practice it is normally reserved for Advent, by the old Sarum custom that some Anglican parishes still keep, or for Marian feasts by long-standing devotional custom - not for this dove-and-rainbow imagery. This stole is better understood as thematic rather than seasonal: it is built around the Holy Spirit and God's covenant rather than around one date in the calendar. It is not the customary red of Pentecost Sunday, and should not stand in for a red stole on that day if your tradition expects one.

03

Who it is for

A priest, pastor, minister or deacon who wants a stole for baptisms, confirmations and weddings that speaks about the Holy Spirit's presence without being locked to one Sunday of the year. It suits clergy who officiate across a range of settings, including chaplaincy work, where a fixed seasonal colour is less useful than a piece that reads well on almost any occasion.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured over both shoulders, and any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in is priced the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added for each further 5 in, up to 160 in. Give your height on the product page and it will suggest a length, which you are free to change - the figure you enter carries through to your cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only.

Store rolled, not folded, so the satin does not crease along the fold lines.

Keep out of direct sunlight to protect the dark navy ground from fading unevenly.

If pressing is needed, work from the reverse side on a low setting and avoid the embroidered medallion.

FAQs

Before you order

Is navy blue correct for Pentecost Sunday?

No. Red is the customary colour for Pentecost in the Roman, Anglican and most Protestant calendars, and this navy stole should not be worn in place of it if your tradition expects red that day.

This piece is better suited to baptisms, confirmations, weddings and other services that speak about the Holy Spirit outside the fixed calendar, since blue itself is not a Roman rite colour at all and appears elsewhere only by regional or denominational custom.

Can this stole be worn to officiate a wedding?

Yes. The dove and rainbow read generally as blessing and covenant imagery, which suits a wedding well, and the design is not tied to a specific liturgical day.

Because blue is not a fixed liturgical colour requirement for weddings in most traditions, the choice comes down to the officiant's and couple's preference rather than a rubric.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
