Details

About this habit

The plainest habit we cut: a solid heather grey wool robe with a wide, rounded cowl collar over the hood and nothing else added, no scapular, no second colour, just a tan rope cincture at the waist. It is available in your size code or tailored to your own measurements.

01

The cut

A pointed hood sits under a wide cowl collar that drapes over both shoulders; below it the body is unbroken grey to the floor, with no scapular or panel of any kind. Wide bell sleeves match the body. The rope cincture is tan, tied at the waist with knotted, tasselled ends, and there are no pockets. Nothing on this habit is stitched in a second colour, which sets it apart from most of the range.

02

Cloth and finish

This is a coarse, flecked, melange wool with real texture under the hand, closer to a tweed than a smooth worsted, and enough weight to let the cowl collar stand away from the shoulder rather than sitting flat. Because there is only the one colour, the texture of the cloth does more of the visual work than on our two-tone habits, and it is worth feeling a swatch before you order if texture matters to you.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the wool. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

This is the simplest, most monastic-reading cut in our range: a solid-colour hooded robe with a rope cincture and cowl collar, without colour-blocking to draw on any one order's dress. We are not linking the grey colouring to any particular community's habit; it is our own choice of cloth. It suits monks, friars, oblates, novices and lay people keeping a rule of life, and anyone who wants an unadorned habit for prayer.

04

Size and fit

We offer fourteen graded sizes and a Made to Measure option; the price steps up with the chest size, and Made to Measure is priced the same as the L sizes. S is 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in, 2XL 50-53in, and each code carries a robe length of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62in from the nape of the neck to the hem, so a code such as M-56 tells you both figures at once. Give us your own figures under Made to Measure if you would prefer that route. The garment goes on over the head with nothing to do up at the front.

Care

This coarse wool benefits from airing rather than frequent washing; have it dry cleaned when it needs a proper clean.

Press only where needed and keep the iron away from the cowl collar so its rounded shape holds.

FAQs

Before you order

Does this habit have a scapular?

No. The body is a single, unbroken grey with no scapular or panel; the wide cowl collar over the hood is the only feature added to an otherwise plain robe. It is the simplest cut we make.

Can it be worn over other clothing?

It is cut loose and full through the body, with room to layer beneath it. It pulls on over the head, so allow for that when dressing in it.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
