Details

About this habit

This habit sets a black scapular and hood squarely against a grey tunic, a graphic two-tone pairing rather than the softer tonal contrast seen elsewhere in our range.

01

The cut

The scapular runs front and back over a grey tunic, in solid black that reads as a near-solid vertical panel from both angles, and the hood matches it exactly, pointed, with a deep centre-back seam. Sleeves are grey, wide and bell-shaped, left uncontrasted so the eye goes to the black panel rather than the sleeve. The scapular's hem sits slightly higher than the tunic's, giving a stepped line at the base rather than one continuous hem. The habit is tunic, scapular and hood only, pulling on over the head with no front fastening.

02

Cloth and finish

The cloth is cotton, smooth and matte, with no sheen. Weight is medium - enough to hold the scapular's shape without the tunic beneath collapsing. The grey and black are both flat, solid colours; there is no print, weave pattern or embroidery anywhere on the garment.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the cotton. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

Tunic, scapular and hood together are a Benedictine-style construction, so we call the cut Benedictine in character, though the strong black-on-grey contrast is a bolder, more graphic treatment than the plain monochrome habits typically worn in that tradition - this colouring is our own choice, not any order's. It suits monks, oblates and lay people who want the Benedictine three-part shape without the tonal restraint of an all-black or all-grey habit.

04

Size and fit

We grade to fourteen sizes, each a chest range with a matching robe length: S 34-37 in, M 38-41 in, L 42-45 in, XL 46-49 in, 2XL 50-53 in, in lengths of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62 in taken from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure, the fifteenth option, is priced the same as the L sizes and built to your own figures. The habit pulls on over the head and has no front fastening.

See how the black scapular compares with the tonal versions in religious habits, check fit against the measuring guide, and read about cloth weights on the fabric guide, or commission a custom vestment in your own colourway.

Care

Wash this habit alone at first, since the black scapular can transfer a little dye onto the grey tunic while both are wet.

A cool, gentle machine cycle or hand wash both work.

Dry flat away from direct heat and iron on a medium setting.

FAQs

Before you order

Will the black-and-grey contrast fade unevenly over time?

Both the grey tunic and the black scapular are dyed as solid, separate panels before construction, so the contrast is built into the cloth rather than printed on. Normal cool washing keeps both colours stable; we do note in the care instructions that the darker panel should be washed apart from paler garments at first.

How does this differ from your tonal grey habit?

Our tonal grey habit cuts the scapular from the same cloth as the tunic, so the panel blends in. This one uses a contrasting solid black for the scapular and hood, giving a much more graphic, two-tone result rather than a single tone throughout.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
