Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Buying as a gift? Give us the wearer's height and we will size it from the chart.

Overview

What this piece is

A green velvet Celtic stole with gold interlaced knotwork and a small Celtic cross at the collar.

Worn through Ordinary Time, and well suited to congregations of Celtic tradition or heritage.

Symbolism

Interlace and knotwork are a long Celtic Christian visual tradition, read by custom as a sign of the unbroken, eternal nature of faith.

The ringed cross at the collar is the Celtic form of the cross, uniting circle and cross in one figure.

Details

About this stole

This stole sets a dense, repeating Celtic knotwork pattern in gold thread onto green velvet panels, with a small Celtic cross worked into the back collar.

01

Design and symbolism

Each velvet panel is filled top to bottom with a rectangular repeat of interlaced gold knotwork — loops that cross under and over one another without a visible beginning or end. That unbroken line is the standard reading of Celtic interlace in a Christian context: a visual statement of a faith without end. At the back collar, on a matching patch of green velvet, a small gold ringed cross is embroidered where only the wearer sees it — the ring joining circle and cross in the form associated with Celtic Christianity. The shoulders and back body of the stole are cut in plain ivory satin, a contrast that sets the velvet panels apart, and the ends close in gold bullion fringe.

02

Liturgical use

Green is the colour of Ordinary Time, the long stretches of the calendar between the major seasons. This is not a stole for Advent, Lent, Christmas or Easter, all of which take other colours. Within Ordinary Time it carries no further restriction, and the Celtic knotwork will read most pointedly in a congregation with Celtic roots or an interest in that visual tradition, though there is no rule confining it there.

03

Who it is for

A priest or pastor who wants a green Ordinary Time stole with real weight to the fabric, or a gift for an ordination where Celtic symbolism suits the person being ordained.

04

Length and fit

The standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), end to end over both shoulders, in a presbyteral cut worn straight down each side. Any made-to-measure length between 84 in and 120 in is priced the same as standard; past 120 in, $10 is added for each further 5 in, to a maximum of 160 in. The height box on this page suggests a length, which you can override — your figure, your height and any notes travel through to the cart, checkout and order.

FAQs

Before you order

Is this stole only appropriate for a Celtic-tradition church?

No. It is a standard green Ordinary Time stole in construction and colour, and the Celtic knotwork is a design choice rather than a denominational marker.

It will naturally appeal most to a congregation with an interest in Celtic Christian visual tradition, but there is no liturgical rule limiting it to that setting.

What is on the back of this stole?

The back is plain ivory satin, matching the shoulders, apart from a small gold Celtic cross embroidered on a patch of green velvet at the collar.

The rest of the visible back panel carries no embroidery.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
