Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

The Ivory Celtic Knot Stole carries a single unbroken band of interlace down the centre of each panel, worked in gold and olive-gold thread with small green leaf sprigs caught in the braid, and left plain at the edges.

01

Design and symbolism

Rather than isolated medallions, the knotwork here runs as one continuous band, bordered on both sides by plain ivory satin. Small green leaves are worked into the interlace at intervals, the only colour against the gold. An unbroken interlace, without a visible start or end, is a traditional Celtic way of picturing something that does not break: a marriage, a covenant, a life given to ministry.

02

Liturgical use

Ivory sits with the white class of vestments, worn at weddings, ordinations and any celebration that calls for white rather than a specific liturgical colour. It is not a seasonal piece for Advent, Lent or a penitential rite, and it carries no Marian-blue or violet association. Practice on the exact shade of white expected at a wedding varies between parishes and traditions, so it is worth checking with whoever else is presiding alongside you before you order.

03

Who it is for

This is cut for a priest, pastor or minister officiating a wedding, and it works equally as an ordination gift for someone who wants a Celtic pattern without a figural scene. The presbyteral cut is worn straight down both shoulders, and the quieter, single-band design sits well alongside a plainer chasuble or alb where a busier stole might compete with it.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders. A made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter a height in the box on this page for a suggested length, and change it if you know your own measurement. Your length, height and any notes carry through to the cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only. Do not machine wash; the gold and olive-gold interlace embroidery is not rated for home laundering.

Store rolled rather than folded, since the plain ivory borders either side of the interlace band will mark at a hard fold line. Keep out of direct sunlight, as the pale ground shows fading and yellowing more readily than a darker cloth, and press from the reverse only, on a low setting.

FAQs

Before you order

Does this suit a Protestant wedding stole?

Yes. The design uses Celtic interlace and leaf motifs rather than a specific denominational emblem, and ivory sits with the general white class of vestments, so it reads as appropriate across Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and other officiant traditions.

Does the interlace pattern run the full length of each panel?

Yes. The knotwork is worked as a single continuous band from the neckline to the hem of each panel, with no separate medallions or breaks in the design.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
