Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Buying as a gift? Give us the wearer's height and we will size it from the chart.

Overview

What this piece is

A green priest's stole with a gold Tree of Life on each panel, its trunk resolving into Celtic interlace at the root, with a small ringed cross worked above the fringe.

Worn through Ordinary Time, and a fitting Celtic-tradition ordination gift.

Symbolism

The tree stands for life rooted in Christ, its branches spreading and its base resolving into an unbroken interlace, a Celtic image of eternity without beginning or end.

The small ringed cross above the fringe keeps the crucifix at the centre of a pattern that could otherwise read as purely ornamental.

Details

About this stole

The Celtic Tree of Life Stole is a green priest's stole with a gold tree embroidered on each panel: a full canopy at the top, a shaded trunk below it, and at the base an interlaced Celtic knot from which the tree appears to grow. A small ringed Celtic cross sits just above the fringe on each panel.

01

Design and symbolism

Each panel carries one continuous vertical design rather than a repeating pattern. The canopy is worked in gold thread with tan and copper shading for depth; the trunk narrows and knots itself into an interlaced root at the base. A small ringed cross, infilled with the same knotwork, is placed above the gold bead fringe on each side. The tree is a long-standing image of life sustained from a single root; set over Celtic interlace, it reads as life without a visible beginning or end, and the small cross keeps that image anchored to the crucifix rather than left as decoration alone. The stitching is fine and dense; whether it was worked by hand or by machine is not something we state without having confirmed it.

02

Liturgical use

Green is the colour of Ordinary Time in the Western calendar, worn on the Sundays and weekdays that fall outside a proper season or feast. It is not worn in Advent, Lent, Christmastide or Eastertide, all of which call for their own colours. Its Celtic design also suits parishes and chaplaincies that keep a Celtic-tradition liturgy, without being reserved to them.

03

Who it is for

Cut in the presbyteral style, worn straight down both shoulders, this stole suits a priest, pastor or minister who wants a green stole with more character than a plain ground, and it works well as an ordination gift for anyone with an Irish, Scottish or Celtic-tradition connection.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders. A made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. Give us a height in the box on this page and it will suggest a length, which you can change. The length, the height and any notes you enter carry through to your cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only. Do not machine wash or tumble dry; the gold thread canopy and bead fringe will not survive it.

Store rolled, not folded, to keep the tree design free of crease lines, and away from direct sunlight so the green ground does not fade unevenly. Press from the reverse on a low setting, and lift the bead fringe clear of the iron rather than pressing over it.

FAQs

Before you order

Is this stole tied to one denomination?

No. Its Celtic tree and knotwork design is used across Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and other traditions that keep a Celtic-influenced liturgy, and green as a colour class belongs to the wider Ordinary Time calendar rather than to any one denomination.

What does the back of this stole look like?

The reverse is plain green fabric with a thin gold edge trim. A small gold cross is embroidered at the back of the neckline, and the gold bead fringe hangs at both bottom ends, but there is no tree or knotwork embroidery on the reverse side.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
