Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Buying as a gift? Give us the wearer's height and we will size it from the chart.

Symbolism

The interlaced Celtic knot, worked here across the whole velvet panel, reads by tradition as a sign of the unbroken, eternal nature of faith.

Details

About this stole

This stole is cut entirely in green velvet, with no contrast panel, and carries a Celtic cross at each collar joined by an interlaced knotwork vine down the length of the piece.

01

Design and symbolism

Where a companion piece in this range sets its knotwork onto a velvet panel against an ivory satin body, this stole is velvet from collar to hem on both sides, giving it more visual and physical weight. A gold Celtic ringed cross sits near the top of each panel, and below it an interlaced gold vine, with small leaves and a heart-shaped knot near the top of the pattern, runs most of the panel's length. The same ringed cross reappears at the back collar. Interlace of this kind is read, by long Celtic Christian custom, as a sign of a faith without a visible end; the paired crosses put that symbol at both the front and the back of the wearer. The ends close in a beaded fringe alternating gold and green beads.

02

Liturgical use

Green marks Ordinary Time. This stole carries no further seasonal claim — it is not worn in Advent, Lent, Christmas or Easter — and, like other Celtic-patterned pieces in this range, it will read most strongly in a congregation with an interest in that tradition, without being restricted to one.

03

Who it is for

A priest or pastor who wants a substantial, all-velvet stole for Ordinary Time, or a gift for an ordination where Celtic symbolism matters to the person receiving it.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), over both shoulders end to end, in a presbyteral cut worn straight down each side. Made-to-measure lengths from 84 in to 120 in are the same price as standard, and $10 is added for every further 5 in past 120 in, up to 160 in. The height box on this page will suggest a length; you may override it, and the figure, your height and any notes travel through to the cart, checkout and order.

FAQs

Before you order

How does this compare to your other green Celtic velvet stole?

This piece is velvet across the whole stole, including the shoulders and back, where a companion Celtic stole in this range keeps velvet only on the front panels and finishes the neck and back in ivory satin.

This one also uses a beaded fringe of alternating gold and green beads, rather than gold bullion fringe, and carries a Celtic cross at both the front and back collar rather than the back alone.

What does 'Personalized' in this stole's listing refer to?

The design is worked as standard knotwork and a Celtic cross only, without any name, initials or added text.

Any personalisation is handled through the order options on this page, most simply your chosen length, rather than through a change to the embroidered pattern itself.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
