Details

About this habit

This is a floor-length monastic habit in deep forest green wool, cut with a dark brown scapular front and back and topped by a wide, rounded pellegrina collar that drapes over both shoulders. Cream bell sleeves break the green body, and a tan rope cincture ties at the waist. It is available in your size code or tailored to your own measurements.

01

The cut

The tunic falls in a full A-line to the floor, cut fuller through the hem than some of our other habits. A pointed hood sits under the pellegrina collar, the widest collar we offer, which spreads out over the shoulders rather than lying flat. The scapular is narrower than the shoulders, rounded at the base, and hangs the same at front and back. Bell sleeves in cream widen towards the cuff. There are no pockets on this style, and the habit goes on over the head with nothing to fasten at the front.

02

Cloth and finish

The body is a medium-weight wool with a brushed, matte face and a smooth handle. It holds its shape without feeling stiff, and the fuller hem swings as you walk. The scapular and pellegrina collar are cut from a dark brown of the same weight, and the sleeves from an unbleached cream, so the finished habit reads as three colours worked together rather than one flat block.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the wool. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

The scapular and rope cincture put this in a Franciscan idiom, but the wide pellegrina collar is not part of any order's dress; it is a styling choice of ours, not a claim about a particular community. Monks, friars, oblates and novices living under a rule wear habits of this general kind, and it suits lay people who keep a rule of life or simply want a habit for private prayer. We are not representing that any named order wears this specific colour combination.

04

Size and fit

We cut fourteen graded sizes plus a Made to Measure option; the price steps up with the chest size, and Made to Measure is priced the same as the L sizes. Chest ranges run S at 34-37in through 2XL at 50-53in, and each size code carries a robe length, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem, of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62in, so you choose chest fit and length together, for example L-58. Choose Made to Measure and send your own numbers if none of the fourteen suit you.

See the rest of our range in religious habits and custom vestments, check your numbers against the measuring guide, and read about how our cloth behaves on the fabric guide.

Care

This is a wool habit. Air it between wears rather than washing it often, and have it dry cleaned when it needs a proper clean.

Press lightly and only where needed; the pellegrina collar holds its shape best if it is not flattened under a hot iron.

FAQs

Before you order

What is the wide collar over the hood?

This is a pellegrina collar: a wide, rounded panel that drapes over both shoulders above the pointed hood. It is a styling choice of ours rather than a feature belonging to a specific order, and it sits above, not instead of, the scapular.

Is the scapular a separate piece?

No. The scapular shown is cut into the garment as part of the construction, front and back, rather than sold as a separate accessory. It is dark brown against the green body and narrower than the shoulders, with a rounded hem.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
