How to measure a chasuble: A is the back length from the shoulder at the neck to the hem, B is the width across from hem tip to hem tip

How to measure

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

A green gothic chasuble for Ordinary Time, with a gold budded cross, wheat ears and a fruiting grapevine worked down the front orphrey and narrow gold piping at every edge. This is the working set: quiet enough for a Tuesday morning, finished well enough for a Sunday.

01

The embroidery

The orphrey is not a laid-on band but a panel marked out by two lines of fine gold piping. A budded Latin cross with fleur-tipped arms stands at the top. Beneath it, crossed wheat ears rise out of curving leaves; below them a grapevine spreads its leaves and clusters; below that two gold quatrefoil rosettes and a broad foliate scroll close the panel at the hem. The same gold piping outlines the neckline and follows the whole curve of the hem.

The back is left plain, with a small gold cross at the collar and gold piping along the hem. The restraint is deliberate: a single embroidered face keeps the vestment light and lets the cloth fall cleanly when the priest turns to the altar.

02

Liturgical use

Green is the colour of Ordinary Time — the Sundays after Epiphany and after Pentecost, and the weekdays between. Around thirty-three weeks of the year fall in that season, more than every other colour together, which is why most sacristies keep a plain green set for daily use as well as a richer one for feasts.

It is not worn on feasts and solemnities inside Ordinary Time, which take white, red or gold, nor in Advent or Lent, which take violet.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms to a rounded hem, with no fastening. The cloth has a soft, low-sheen finish that photographs and reads well under artificial light without the glare of a high satin. The embroidery is outline work rather than dense fill, which keeps the front supple and the garment light to wear for a full liturgy.

04

Sizing and made to measure

Take one of the four graded standard sizes from the size guide on this page, or choose Made to Measure and send us your own figures — height, chest, waist and the front length you want. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large. A vestment you will wear most weeks of the year is worth getting right.

Care

Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner the garment carries metallic-thread embroidery.

  • A vestment worn most weeks lives or dies by how it is hung. Put it on a broad padded hanger straight after Mass rather than leaving it folded in a sacristy drawer.
  • Keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades green faster than most liturgical colours.
  • Press only from the reverse, with a cloth between the iron and the vestment.

FAQs

Before you order

How many Sundays a year is green actually worn?

Roughly thirty-three or thirty-four weeks of the liturgical year fall in Ordinary Time, so green is worn on more days than every other colour put together. Anglican and Lutheran calendars name the same weeks differently, after Pentecost or after Trinity, but the colour is the same.

That is the argument for owning two green chasubles rather than one: a plainer set for weekdays and ordinary Sundays, and a richer set for the feasts and parish occasions that fall inside the season.

What do the wheat and the grapes stand for?

Wheat and the fruiting vine are the bread and the wine of the Mass, the plainest Eucharistic pairing in Christian art. Set beneath the cross, as they are here, they read as the offering the priest is vested to make.

The vine also carries John 15, the vine and the branches, which is why it so often runs the length of an orphrey rather than sitting as a single motif.

Why is the back plain?

It is the older restraint. A single embroidered face keeps the vestment light, keeps the cost down, and lets the fall of the cloth do the work when the priest turns to the altar. The only ornament on the back is a small gold cross at the collar and gold piping along the hem.

If you want an embroidered back as well, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, and we will send you a quotation.

How does this differ from your Celtic cross green chasuble?

This one is the working set: a soft matte green, gold outline embroidery on the front only, and narrow gold piping instead of a contrasting orphrey band. It reads quietly and wears well week after week.

The Celtic cross chasuble is the fuller one, with a broad ivory orphrey, dense knotwork crosses, an embroidered standing collar and a Jerusalem cross on the back. Many sacristies keep both and reach for the plainer one on weekdays.

Should I choose Standard Size or Made to Measure?

A standard size chosen on height suits most wearers. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges or want a particular hem length. A vestment worn every week is worth getting right. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

Will it hold up to weekly use?

It is cut for it. The embroidery is outline work rather than dense fill, which keeps the front supple and the weight down, and there is no laid-on orphrey band to lift at the edges over time.

Dry clean only. Hang it on a broad padded hanger straight after Mass rather than leaving it folded in the sacristy drawer, keep it out of direct sunlight, and press from the reverse with a cloth.
