Chasuble sizing

Worn over the alb, a chasuble is sized by length and width, not by chest. Choose the size for your height, or Made to Measure.

How to measure a chasuble: A is the back length from the shoulder at the neck to the hem, B is the width across from hem tip to hem tip

How to measure

Measure over the alb you will wear.

  • A - Back length: from the shoulder seam beside the neck, straight down the back to where the hem should fall. Mid-calf is usual.
  • B - Width across: arms held out level, from wrist to wrist.

Overview

What this piece is

A green satin gothic chasuble for Ordinary Time, with a broad ivory orphrey carrying two knotwork Celtic crosses, a chalice and wheat, and a gold Jerusalem cross on the back.

Green is worn on more Sundays than any other colour, so this is the set a priest reaches for most. Offered in four standard sizes, or tailored to your own measurements; Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

Symbolism

The ringed Celtic crosses, filled with interlaced knotwork, belong to the Irish and Northumbrian tradition of the cross.

The Jerusalem cross on the back - one cross potent with four smaller crosses in its quarters - has long been read as the Gospel carried out to the four corners of the earth.

The chalice and host rising from wheat at the foot of the front orphrey are the Eucharist the chasuble is worn to celebrate.

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

A green satin gothic chasuble for Ordinary Time, with a broad ivory orphrey carrying two interlaced Celtic crosses on the front and a gold Jerusalem cross on the back. The standing collar is embroidered with a gold vine that runs into the orphrey below it.

01

The embroidery

The front orphrey is an ivory band edged in gold galloon, wide enough to be read from the nave. At the top a ringed Celtic cross filled with knotwork sits between olive branches; below it a gothic arcade frames a second Celtic cross, and at the foot a chalice and host rise from sheaves of wheat within curling foliate scroll.

The back turns the scheme around. On the green ground a gold Jerusalem cross, one large cross potent with four smaller crosses in its quarters, sits inside a quatrefoil cartouche, and a tall column of gold vine and wheat scrollwork falls from it to the hem. The standing collar is embroidered on both faces with the same gold vine.

02

Liturgical use

Green is the colour of Ordinary Time, worn on the Sundays between the Christmas season and Lent and between Pentecost and Advent. Because those weeks make up most of the year, a green set is the one a priest reaches for most often, and this one is cut and embroidered to survive that.

It is not worn on feasts and solemnities inside Ordinary Time, which take white, red or gold according to the day, nor in Advent and Lent, which take violet.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms to a rounded hem, with no fastening. The ground is a satin-finish cloth with a soft green lustre; the orphrey is a separate ivory band set into the front and the embroidery is stitched rather than applied as a patch. The standing collar is cut and stiffened so the neckline holds its shape over the alb.

04

Sizing and made to measure

Take one of the four graded standard sizes from the size guide on this page, or choose Made to Measure and send us your own figures — height, chest, waist and the front length you want — and the chasuble is cut to them. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

Care

Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner the garment carries metallic-thread embroidery.

  • A pale orphrey on a dark ground shows marks sooner than an all-over colour, so deal with anything on it promptly rather than letting it set.
  • Hang it on a broad padded hanger in a vestment press or garment bag, and keep it out of direct sunlight.
  • Press only from the reverse, with a cloth between the iron and the vestment. Never press the embroidery directly.

FAQs

Before you order

When is a green chasuble worn?

Green is the colour of Ordinary Time, the long stretches of the year between the Christmas season and Lent, and between Pentecost and Advent. That makes it the colour worn on more Sundays than any other, which is why most sacristies keep more than one green set.

It is not worn on feasts and solemnities falling within Ordinary Time, which take white, red or gold according to the day.

What do the Celtic cross and the Jerusalem cross stand for?

The two interlaced crosses on the front orphrey are Celtic crosses, the ringed form that came out of Ireland and Northumbria and is filled here with the knotwork of that tradition.

The cross on the back is a Jerusalem cross: one large cross potent with four smaller crosses in its quarters, long associated with the Holy Land and, by common reading, with the Gospel carried out to the four corners of the earth. Below the front crosses a chalice and host rise from sheaves of wheat, the Eucharist the chasuble is worn to celebrate.

Is this suitable outside the Roman Catholic Church?

Yes. The gothic chasuble and the green of Ordinary Time are common to Anglican, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist and Old Catholic use, and the Celtic and Jerusalem crosses carry no confessional claim of their own.

Some traditions call the same season by another name, such as the Sundays after Pentecost or after Trinity. The vestment is the same; only the calendar differs.

What is the raised collar at the neck?

It is a standing or cowl collar, cut and stiffened so the neckline stands up rather than lying flat, and embroidered here with a gold vine that continues the pattern of the orphrey.

It gives the shoulders a cleaner line over the alb and keeps the neckline from slipping backwards during Mass. If you prefer a plain flat neckline instead, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes.

Should I choose Standard Size or Made to Measure?

For most wearers a standard size chosen on height is right, since a chasuble is wide and unfastened. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the garment to sit differently over the arms. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How should the ivory orphrey be kept clean?

Dry clean only, and mention the metallic-thread embroidery to the cleaner. A pale orphrey on a dark ground shows marks sooner than an all-over colour, so deal with anything on it promptly rather than letting it set.

Hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger in a vestment press or garment bag, keep it out of direct sunlight, and press only from the reverse with a cloth between the iron and the cloth.
