Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Buying as a gift? Give us the wearer's height and we will size it from the chart.

Overview

What this piece is

A green stole with a gold Tree of Life on each panel, its trunk descending into an interlaced Celtic knot at the base, worked without a separate cross emblem.

Symbolism

The tree's canopy and root stand for a single continuous life, its base worked as unbroken interlace rather than a plain trunk.

Unlike our other Celtic tree stole, no separate cross is worked near the hem; the tree and knot carry the whole design.

Details

About this stole

The Green Celtic Tree of Life Pastor Stole repeats the tree-and-knotwork design of our other Celtic tree stole, in the same green ground and gold thread, but leaves out the small cross worked near the hem on that piece. Here the tree and its interlaced root carry the whole design, front to back.

01

Design and symbolism

A gold tree rises on each panel from a leafy canopy at the top to a shaded trunk, which resolves at the base into an interlaced Celtic knot rather than ending in a plain root. There is no separate cross emblem above the fringe on this stole, which is the one clear difference from the similar Celtic tree stole elsewhere in this collection. The reverse is left entirely plain, with no embroidery and no neckline cross. The tree read this way, growing straight out of an unbroken knot, is a Celtic image of life sustained at its root; the absence of a separate cross keeps that single image uninterrupted down the length of the panel.

02

Liturgical use

Green marks Ordinary Time in the Western calendar and is worn on the Sundays and weekdays outside a named season or feast. It is not a stole for Advent, Lent, Christmas or Easter, each of which has its own proper colour.

03

Who it is for

Cut in the presbyteral style, straight down both shoulders, this suits a pastor or priest who wants a plainer green stole without additional emblems, and it makes a straightforward ordination gift. It also suits someone who wants the same Celtic tree image as our other stole but in a simpler form, without the extra cross carried near the hem on that piece.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders. Any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard; beyond that, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. The height box on this page suggests a length, which you can override. Your length, height and any notes travel through to the cart, checkout and order.

06

Care

Dry clean only. The gold canopy and root embroidery, and the bead fringe, are not suited to a home washing machine or dryer.

Store rolled rather than folded to avoid a crease across the trunk of the tree motif, and keep out of direct sunlight so the green ground fades evenly if at all. Press from the reverse on a low setting, avoiding the fringe.

FAQs

Before you order

How does this differ from your other Celtic tree stole?

The design is the same gold tree rising from an interlaced knot, on the same green ground, but this stole does not carry the small ringed cross worked above the hem on the other version. Its reverse is also left entirely plain, with no neckline cross.

Does this suit a non-Catholic pastor?

Yes. The tree and knotwork design is used across Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist and other traditions as well as Catholic ones, and green as a liturgical colour marks Ordinary Time broadly across those traditions, not one denomination alone.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
