Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

What this piece is

A burgundy stole with an ivory centre band on each panel, embroidered in gold with a wheat-and-ribbon vine, small crosses and a Celtic cross on the back yoke.

For ordinations and weddings, and for the wider red liturgical class.

Symbolism

Wheat stands for the bread of the Eucharist and, through buried grain rising again, for resurrection. The Celtic cross on the back yoke is a separate, single motif not repeated on the front.

Details

About this stole

This priest's stole frames a narrow ivory centre band in burgundy on each panel, the ivory worked densely in gold with a scrolling wheat-and-ribbon vine and a run of small crosses, ending in a thick gold fringe. The Clergy Couture makes it to your own measurements, at no extra cost up to 120 in.

01

Design and symbolism

Rather than embroidering directly onto the burgundy ground, this design sets a separate ivory band down the centre of each panel and does all its needlework there, so the gold thread reads clearly against pale fabric rather than competing with the dark surround. The band carries a continuous wheat-and-ribbon vine with several small crosses spaced along its length, finishing at a thick gold fringe. Wheat is the older of the two symbols here, standing for the bread of the Eucharist and, through the image of buried grain rising again, for resurrection; the small crosses set along the vine keep that reading in view rather than letting the wheat stand alone as decoration. On the back, a single larger Celtic, or ringed, cross sits on the yoke, a motif not repeated anywhere on the front.

02

Liturgical use

Burgundy sits within the red class in most Western traditions, used for Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost, and the feasts of martyrs, as well as, by wider custom, for ordinations and weddings where a richer tone than plain scarlet is wanted. This stole's ivory-and-gold band gives it a formal, celebratory look suited to those latter two occasions particularly, alongside its place in the red liturgical class generally.

03

Who it is for

A priest being ordained, or one officiating at a wedding, is the clearest fit, and the piece works equally well as a gift marking either occasion. The Celtic cross on the back is a small detail worth knowing about if the wearer has a particular attachment to that cross form, since it will not be visible from the front.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm) end to end over the shoulders, in the presbyteral cut worn straight down both sides. Made to measure from 84 in to 120 in is priced the same as standard, and $10 is added for every further 5 in past that, up to 160 in. Enter your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, or set your own; the length, height and any notes you give carry through to your cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only. The ivory centre band marks more readily than the burgundy surround, so keep it away from make-up, oils and coloured liquids.

Store rolled rather than folded, out of direct sunlight, and press from the reverse side; handle the gold fringe carefully.

FAQs

Before you order

Is this burgundy stole a suitable ordination gift?

Yes. Burgundy sits within the red liturgical class used for ordinations in many traditions, and the ivory band with its gold wheat and small crosses gives the piece a formal look that suits a once-in-a-lifetime occasion rather than everyday wear.

The Celtic cross on the back yoke is a further detail some buyers choose this piece for specifically, if the person being ordained has a particular connection to that cross form.

What is embroidered on the back of this stole?

A single Celtic, or ringed, cross sits on the back yoke in gold thread, larger than the small crosses worked into the front wheat vine and set on its own rather than repeated down the panel.

It does not appear on the front at all, so it is really a detail for the wearer rather than the congregation, visible mainly when the stole is put on or taken off.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
