Details

About this cassock

A burgundy cassock robe with a cream shoulder yoke, cut to pair with a cream stole worked in gold chalices and crosses for communion.

01

The cut

The robe is a straight full-length cassock closing down the centre front, with a shaped cream yoke across the shoulders and collar that comes to a shallow point at the centre back. A fine gold band sits above each cuff. There is a flapped pocket at the hip, marked with a small gold chalice, which is the detail that makes this robe practical for a celebrant who carries a service card or spectacles. Sleeves are long and straight, the skirt is cut full enough to move in, and there is a centre vent through the back.

02

The stole

The matching stole is cream, edged in gold on both long sides, and carries a gold chalice on one tail and a gold cross on the other, with a third motif at the neck. The chalice is the historic mark of the eucharistic minister and reads immediately at the communion rail. The stole hangs to the same depth as the robe's skirt break.

03

Cloth and finish

Both pieces are made in cotton with a matte face. The burgundy is a deep wine rather than a bright red, which keeps it reading as a considered liturgical colour beside an altar frontal, and the cream is warm enough to sit against it without the hard contrast a pure white would give.

04

Robe only, or robe and stole

The Style dropdown decides what ships. Robe Only is the burgundy cassock with its cream yoke, gold cuff bands and chalice pocket. Robe + Stole adds the chalice and cross stole shown in the photographs and adds $80 at every size code. The photographs show the pair.

05

Who wears it

Deep red and burgundy are worn for Pentecost, Passion services, ordinations and the feasts of the martyrs across the Western calendar, and many Protestant congregations use burgundy as a general communion colour without tying it to a season. It suits a priest, pastor or minister who presides at the table regularly.

06

Size and fit

The robe is cut to fourteen graded size codes, each pairing a chest measurement with a finished length. S covers a 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in and 2XL 50-53in; the number after the letter is the robe length in inches from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure is priced at the same step as the L sizes and cut to your own figures.

Care

Dry clean only. A cream yoke against deep burgundy is exactly the combination that suffers in a domestic wash, and the gold chalice embroidery will not survive one.

Treat communion spills promptly by blotting rather than rubbing, and take the robe to a cleaner rather than working at a wine stain yourself. Press on the reverse with a cool iron and store the stole flat or loosely rolled.

FAQs

Before you order

What is the difference between Robe Only and Robe + Stole?

Robe Only is the robe by itself, with whatever belt, sash or cincture is listed in the specifications for that robe. Robe + Stole adds the matching stole shown in the photographs, cut and finished to the same cloth and trim as the robe, and adds $80 to the price at every size code.

The choice is made in the Style dropdown on this page and the price updates as soon as you change it. If you already own a stole in the right liturgical colour, Robe Only is the sensible choice; if you want the two pieces matched by the same hand in the same cloth, take the pair.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears chancel steps more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How does the cassock robe fasten, and what is worn under it?

The robe fastens down the front, and the specifications on this page say whether that is a button placket or a concealed closure. It is cut with ease so it hangs cleanly over an ordinary shirt and clergy collar, or over a clergy shirt, without pulling across the chest when you raise your arms to preach.

Where a belt, sash or cincture is included it ties or buckles at the natural waist. A stole is worn over the robe, not under it, and goes on last.

How should the robe be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning, and it is the only sensible route for any robe with embroidery or metallic trim. Hang the robe full length on a broad-shouldered hanger between services rather than folding it, so no crease sets across the skirt.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never directly over embroidery or braid, and keep coloured robes out of direct sunlight in storage. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.

How long will my robe take to arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 5 to 7 days, and delivery takes a further 10 to 15 days after dispatch. Choosing Robe + Stole does not change the dispatch time.

If you are ordering for a specific ordination, installation or feast day, tell us the date in the order notes and we will confirm by email whether it can be met.
