Overview

What this piece is

A black gothic chasuble in satin, worked in gold with the Agnus Dei on the back and the crown of thorns and the INRI cross down the front.

Symbolism

The Lamb of God carrying the cross-staff, set at the centre of the back orphrey, is the sign of Christ offered for the world and one of the oldest images the Church places before her dead.

On the front, the crown of thorns stands between a flowering gothic cross above and the cross lettered INRI below, so the Passion and the title Pilate wrote over it are read in a single column.

Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

A black gothic chasuble in satin, embroidered in gold with the Agnus Dei on the back and the crown of thorns on the front. It is made for the Masses the Church keeps in black: Requiems, funerals, and the commemoration of All Souls.

01

The embroidery

The back orphrey carries the Lamb of God at its centre, standing with the cross-staff inside a gold gothic arch, and beneath it a long column of fleur-de-lys scrollwork worked in a single tone of gold. The front orphrey answers it with three signs read from the top down: a flowering gothic cross, the crown of thorns, and a cross lettered INRI rising out of foliate scroll. A narrow gold galloon runs the length of the orphrey on both faces, and a small gold cross is set at the back of the neck.

The whole scheme is gold on black with no second colour. On a vestment worn at a funeral that restraint earns its keep: the motifs stay legible from the back of a church without the garment ever becoming ornate.

02

Liturgical use

Black belongs to the Masses of the dead. This chasuble is made for the Requiem Mass, funerals, month's mind and anniversary Masses, and All Souls' Day, and it is equally at home in the Roman rite and in Anglican and Lutheran practice where black is kept for the departed.

It is not worn in Advent or Lent, which call for violet, nor on Good Friday or at Pentecost, which call for red. Where your own tradition prefers violet or white for funerals, follow your ordinary.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut: wide across the shoulders, falling in a deep curve over the arms and shaped to a rounded hem, with no fastening, since the chasuble is drawn on over the head. The ground is a satin-finish cloth with a clear lustre that carries candlelight without glare, and the embroidery is stitched into the orphrey rather than applied as a patch.

04

Sizing and made to measure

Choose one of the four graded standard sizes, or choose Made to Measure and give us your own figures — height, chest, waist and the front length you want — and the chasuble is cut to them. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large. The size guide on this page gives the back length and the width across for every standard size.

Care

Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner the garment carries dense metallic-thread embroidery.

  • Hang it on a broad padded hanger in a vestment press or garment bag as soon as it comes off. Black satin holds a crease more visibly than any other liturgical colour.
  • Keep it out of direct sunlight, which dulls gold thread and fades black cloth to grey.
  • Never press the embroidery directly. If pressing is needed, work from the reverse with a cloth between the iron and the vestment.

FAQs

Before you order

Is black still worn for a Requiem Mass?

Yes. Black remains one of the colours appointed for Masses for the dead in the Roman rite, alongside violet and white, and it is widely used in Anglican and Lutheran practice as well. Which of the three is used varies by country, by parish custom and sometimes by the wishes of the family, so follow your own ordinary where local practice differs.

What do the Agnus Dei and the crown of thorns stand for?

The Agnus Dei on the back orphrey is the Lamb of God carrying the cross-staff, the sign of Christ offered for the world and one of the oldest images placed before the Church's dead.

On the front, the crown of thorns sits between a flowering gothic cross above and the cross lettered INRI below, so the Passion and the title Pilate wrote over it are read in one column as the priest stands at the altar.

Does the chasuble come with the stole shown in the photographs?

What you order here is the chasuble. The stole appears in the photographs to show how the set is worn together.

If you would like a stole embroidered to match, write to support@theclergycouture.com before or just after ordering and we will confirm the price and whether it can be dispatched together with the chasuble.

Should I choose Standard Size or Made to Measure?

A chasuble is a wide unfastened garment, so most wearers are served well by a standard size chosen on height. Use the size guide on this page and pick the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you are much taller or shorter than the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you prefer the garment to fall a certain way over the arms. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How long will it take to reach me?

Orders are dispatched within 5 to 7 days, and delivery takes a further 10 to 15 days after dispatch.

If you need it for a particular funeral or anniversary, write to us with the date before you order and we will tell you honestly whether it can arrive in time rather than promise and miss it.

How should a satin chasuble be cleaned and stored?

Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner the garment carries dense metallic-thread embroidery. Do not machine wash and do not soak.

Keep it on a broad padded hanger in a vestment press or a garment bag. Black satin shows creases and marks more than any other liturgical colour, so hang it as soon as it comes off rather than folding it, and keep it out of direct sunlight, which dulls gold thread.
