Details

About this habit

A stone grey habit with a black hooded scapular and a black rope cincture, in a cotton that holds a clean, structured line.

01

The cut

The habit sets a stone-grey tunic against a black scapular that runs the full length of the body, front and back, with a black hood at the top of it. The scapular is a straight panel, sharply distinct in colour from the tunic beneath. The hood, black to match, carries a moderate point and stands off the neck rather than falling flat. Sleeves are cut in the wide bell shape common to this range. A black rope cincture ties at the waist, its tasselled ends hanging down. The tunic carries no pocket, and its hem sits plain at the floor; like the rest of our habits it is pulled on over the head rather than fastened at the front.

02

Cloth and finish

The cotton is smooth and matte, catching a slight sheen in some light, and holds a structured drape rather than a soft one. The tunic reads as a pale stone grey, close to an undyed cloth, set against a solid black scapular and hood, so the garment is two-tone rather than a single block of colour.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the cotton. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

A light, undyed-looking tunic paired with a black scapular is a genuine echo of the Cistercian choir habit, so this cut is Cistercian in character, closer to that historical pattern than most colour-blocked habits we cut. It suits monks living under that observance, oblates and novices attached to a Cistercian-pattern community, and lay people who keep a rule of prayer and want this particular pairing of stone and black.

04

Size and fit

Size is set across fourteen graded codes, chest range against robe length in every case: S 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in, 2XL 50-53in, paired with a length of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62in from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure, our fifteenth choice, is priced the same as the L sizes. Nothing fastens at the front: it is pulled on over the head.

See this pairing beside our other cuts in religious habits, read more on our cloths in the fabric guide, and consult the vestment glossary for scapular terms.

Care

Wash this habit on a cool, gentle cycle, and keep the black scapular from sitting wet against the stone-grey tunic for long, since pale cloth marks more readily.

Line dry out of direct sun and press from the reverse side if the tunic needs it.

FAQs

Before you order

Is this the official habit of a Cistercian community?

No community's official habit is claimed for this one. The stone-and-black pairing genuinely echoes the pattern of the Cistercian choir habit, which is why we describe the cut as Cistercian in character, but it is our own make and not issued by any order.

Can the scapular be left off and the tunic worn alone?

As supplied, the scapular is sewn to the tunic as one fixed garment rather than a separate piece, so it is not meant to be worn without it.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
