Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

This green stole carries a Franciscan nature scene down both panels: small birds, a dove beneath a gold sunburst, a gold Tau cross, flowering vines, and, near the hem, a rabbit, a deer and a fox among foliage.

01

Design and symbolism

The design reads top to bottom as a single scene rather than a repeated pattern. Small birds and a dove beneath a radiating gold sunburst sit near the shoulder, followed by a gold Tau cross, the T-shaped cross Francis of Assisi adopted as his own sign and used to mark his letters. Below it, more birds and flowering vines lead to a rabbit, a deer and a fox worked in gold, brown, cream and white near the fringed hem. The reverse of the panels shows a gold-toned lining rather than the green face fabric; this is the underside of the cloth, not a second colourway, and is only visible when the stole is worn over the shoulder or handled from behind.

02

Liturgical use

Green is the colour of Ordinary Time, the longer stretches of the calendar outside Advent, Christmastide, Lent and Eastertide. This particular design, with its Tau cross and animal imagery, is written for the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi on 4 October and for Blessing of the Animals services associated with it, rather than for Ordinary Time generally. It is not a Lent, Advent or white-feast stole.

03

Who it is for

A pastor or priest leading a Blessing of the Animals service or marking the Feast of Saint Francis, and a natural gift for clergy with a Franciscan or creation-care ministry.

04

Length and fit

Standard length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders and worn straight down in the presbyteral cut. Made-to-measure lengths from 84 in to 120 in are priced the same as standard, and $10 is added for every further 5 in past 120 in, up to 160 in. Enter your height on this page for a suggested length, or choose your own. Whatever you settle on, together with your height and any notes, travels through to your cart, checkout and order.

FAQs

Before you order

Why does the back of the stole look gold, not green?

That is the reverse, or lining, fabric showing in that view, not a second colourway. The face fabric worn outward is green throughout; the gold tone only appears where the underside of the cloth is visible, such as at the shoulder or from directly behind.

Can this be worn outside the Feast of St Francis?

The green ground places it within Ordinary Time generally, but the Tau cross and animal imagery are written specifically for St Francis and Blessing of the Animals occasions, and read most fittingly on those nature-themed services.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
