Details

About this habit

A sage green cotton habit with a wide, rounded cape collar over the hood and a scapular in a slightly darker olive tone, cinched with a tan rope belt. It is available in your size code or tailored to your own measurements.

01

The cut

A pointed hood sits under a wide, rounded cape collar that drapes over both shoulders. The scapular runs the full length front and back, rounded at the hem, in an olive that sits close to the sage body rather than contrasting sharply with it. Sleeves match the sage body, with no contrast. A tan rope cincture ties at the waist, its knotted ends hanging down the front, and there are no pockets.

02

Cloth and finish

The cloth is a light cotton with a smooth, matte, twill-like finish, easy to wear and noticeably lighter than the wool option. The sage-and-olive colouring is tonal rather than high-contrast, so the scapular reads as a shift in shade against the body rather than a bold panel.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the cotton. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

The rounded scapular, rope cincture and cape collar loosely echo a Franciscan friar's habit, though the sage-and-olive colouring is our own choice and not a claim about any order's dress. It suits monks, friars, oblates, novices and lay people keeping a rule of life, and anyone who prefers this softer, tonal colouring to a sharper two-tone habit. The lighter cotton cloth also suits it to a milder climate or to indoor wear through most of the year.

04

Size and fit

Every habit in our range, this one included, comes in fourteen graded sizes plus Made to Measure; the price steps up with the chest size, and Made to Measure is priced the same as the L sizes. Chest sizing runs S 34-37in through 2XL 50-53in, and each size code is paired with a robe length of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62in from the nape of the neck to the hem. Give us your own measurements instead if you prefer the Made to Measure route. The garment goes on over the head with no buttons to do up at the front.

Care

This cotton can take more frequent washing than a wool habit; wash on a gentle cycle and keep drying heat moderate.

Iron the sage body on a moderate setting and press the olive scapular from the reverse side so the tonal contrast stays even.

FAQs

Before you order

Why is the scapular a similar colour to the robe?

We cut this scapular in a darker olive that sits close to the sage body rather than a sharply contrasting colour, for a softer, tonal look than our two-tone habits.

What is the wide collar for?

It is a cape collar that drapes over both shoulders above the hood. It is a styling addition of ours and is not tied to the dress of a specific order.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
