Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

This rose stole is worked in a dusty rose satin, embroidered on both panels with a vertical vine of cream, blush and dusty-pink roses, a radiant gold cross set partway down among the flowers, and a small plain gold cross near the hem.

01

Design and symbolism

The rose vine runs the full length of each panel in cream, blush and dusty-pink thread with green leaves, and a gold cross with radiating rays is set within the vine rather than beside it, so the cross reads as part of the planting rather than an applied emblem. A second, plainer gold cross sits near the hem below a further cluster of roses. The rose itself has long stood as an image of joy tempered with restraint, which is the mood of the two Sundays this colour marks.

02

Liturgical use

Rose is a permitted colour on only two days in the Western calendar: Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent, and Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent, both days of relief within otherwise penitential or preparatory seasons. Outside those two Sundays, violet is worn for the rest of Advent and Lent, and not every tradition observes rose vestments at all. This stole is not a general Advent or Lent piece; it belongs specifically to those two Sundays.

03

Who it is for

A priest or pastor who observes Gaudete and Laetare Sunday and wants a single stole for both occasions, or a gift for clergy who value having the correct rose vestment on hand rather than substituting violet.

04

Length and fit

The standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm) end to end over the shoulders, worn straight down in the presbyteral cut. Made-to-measure lengths from 84 in to 120 in are priced the same as standard, and $10 is added for every further 5 in beyond 120 in, up to 160 in. The height box on this page will suggest a length once you enter your height, and you are free to change it. Your chosen length, height and notes carry through to your cart, checkout and order record.

FAQs

Before you order

Can I wear this rose stole outside Gaudete or Laetare Sunday?

Rose is reserved to Gaudete Sunday in Advent and Laetare Sunday in Lent in traditions that use it; it is not customary on other days of those seasons, and some traditions do not use rose vestments at all. This stole is made for those two Sundays specifically.

How does this differ from your silver-cross rose stole?

This design has a plain rose satin ground with a radiant gold cross set within the rose vine. The companion piece in this collection is built as a striped, colour-blocked panel with a silver cross, silver fringe and a star-and-ribbon trail, giving it a cooler, more decorative finish.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
