Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

Red Pentecost stole with a radiant gold dove, flame and small cross, dove repeated on the back yoke.

Worn for Pentecost Sunday and pastoral ordinations.

Gold bead fringe, cut to any length you give us.

Symbolism

The dove with radiating rays pictures the Spirit's descent at Pentecost in motion rather than as a static emblem. The flame recalls Acts 2, and the small cross near the hem keeps Christ's cross present within the Pentecost imagery.

Details

About this stole

The Radiant Dove Pentecost Stole is a deep red stole embroidered on both panels with a gold and cream dove beneath a fan of radiating gold rays, an orange, gold and cream flame lower down, and a small gold cross near the fringed hem. A matching dove is worked again on the back neck yoke.

01

Design and symbolism

The dove sits near the shoulder of each panel with a fan of gold rays radiating beneath it, a treatment that gives the descent of the Spirit a sense of movement rather than a static emblem. Further down, a flame in orange, gold and cream repeats the theme of the tongues of fire at Pentecost, and a small plain gold cross sits near the hem. The same small dove reappears on the back neck yoke, a detail visible only from behind and worth knowing about if you plan to be seen from the back during a procession.

02

Liturgical use

Red is worn for Pentecost Sunday, for apostles' and martyrs' feasts, and by custom for ordinations and pastoral installations. It does not belong in Ordinary Time, Advent, Lent or on white-class feast days. The radiating rays and repeated dove motif here read most naturally as a Pentecost and ordination piece rather than a general martyr's-feast red.

03

Who it is for

A pastor or minister presiding at Pentecost, or being ordained or installed into a new pastorate. The back-neck dove detail makes it a thoughtful choice as an ordination gift, since it carries the design through even when the giver only sees the wearer from behind at the service.

04

Length and fit

Finished length is 120 in (305 cm) standard, measured end to end over the shoulders and worn straight down in the presbyteral cut. Made-to-measure lengths between 84 in and 120 in are priced the same as standard, and each further 5 in past 120 in, up to 160 in, adds $10. Give your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, or enter your own. Whatever you choose is recorded with your order at checkout.

FAQs

Before you order

How is this different from your other red Pentecost stoles?

This design centres on a dove with a fan of radiating gold rays beneath it, a small cross near the hem, and a matching dove repeated on the back neck yoke; it does not carry a tree of life motif. The other red Pentecost stoles in this range use a plain dove with a vine of small crosses, or a plain dove above a large rooted tree, so the three are distinguished by which of these elements they include.

Is the dove visible from behind when worn?

Yes. A small gold dove is embroidered on the centre back neck yoke, in addition to the larger radiant dove on each front panel, so the motif carries through even when the wearer is seen only from behind.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
