Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

A red stole with a small dove near the collar and a flame-and-cross unit repeated three times down each panel, joined by a gold scroll.

For Pentecost, Confirmation and Holy Spirit-themed services.

Symbolism

The dove is the traditional sign of the Holy Spirit; the flame recalls the tongues of fire at Pentecost described in Acts 2; the cross represents Christ's death and resurrection. The three-times repetition down the panel is a design rhythm rather than a symbol in its own right.

Details

About this stole

Where some of our other Pentecost stoles place the dove, flame and rainbow once, this piece repeats a smaller flame-and-cross unit three times down each panel, linked by a thin gold scroll, with a single dove worked near the top of each side. It is worked on a red ground with a faint tone-on-tone diamond weave, and can be tailored to your length.

01

Design and symbolism

Near the top of each panel a small gold-outlined dove sits above a repeating unit of a flame over a cross, joined by a fine gold scroll; that unit appears three times down the length of each panel before ending in one further flame just above the fringe. The dove is the familiar sign of the Holy Spirit; the flame recalls the tongues of fire that descended on the apostles at Pentecost in Acts 2; the cross needs no gloss. The repetition itself is a design choice - a rhythm carried down the panel - rather than a count with a fixed symbolic number attached to it. At the back neck, a single gold cross sits on a velvet-look red collar, while the hanging panels show a plain ivory-cream tone from behind rather than red - the reverse face of the fabric.

02

Liturgical use

Red is the colour of Pentecost and of Confirmation across the traditions that mark them, and this stole's dove-flame-cross imagery is built squarely for both. It also suits ordinations timed near Pentecost and other services centred on the Holy Spirit. It is a specific piece rather than a general-purpose red: keep it for these occasions rather than for the feasts of martyrs, where a plainer red stole is the better choice.

03

Who it is for

Cut as a presbyteral stole for a pastor or minister, it suits clergy who preach at Pentecost and Confirmation services and want the Spirit's imagery repeated rather than stated once, and it works as a Confirmation-season gift for a minister who already owns a plainer red stole.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders. Made-to-measure lengths from 84 in to 120 in are priced the same as standard, and $10 is added for every further 5 in beyond that, up to 160 in. Enter your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, or set your own figure instead; the length, height and any notes you give carry through to your cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only. Store rolled, not folded, to protect the gold fringe and the repeating embroidery, keep the stole out of direct sunlight, and press from the reverse on a low setting, taking extra care around the velvet-look collar detail, which crushes more easily than the satin body.

FAQs

Before you order

Why does the flame and cross motif repeat three times?

It is a design decision to carry a visual rhythm down the length of each panel, rather than a count that carries its own separate symbolism. Each individual flame and cross keeps its usual meaning - the tongues of fire at Pentecost and the cross of Christ - but we are not attaching any further significance to the number of repeats itself.

Why do the back panels look ivory instead of red?

The hanging panels show a plain ivory-cream tone from behind, the reverse face of the fabric, while the collar at the back keeps its red, velvet-look finish with a small gold cross. The red, embroidered face is what shows when the stole is worn in the usual way, over both shoulders.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
