Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

The Pentecost Dove Stole is worked in a warm red-orange satin-faced cloth rather than a true scarlet, embroidered top to bottom on both panels with a small gold and white dove, a vine of gold thread carrying three small crosses, and a stylized gold-orange flame set just above the fringed hem.

01

Design and symbolism

Each panel opens at the shoulder with a small dove worked in gold and white thread, the standard image of the Holy Spirit used at Pentecost and at Baptism. Below it a slender gold vine runs the length of the panel, with three small crosses set along its branches, a nod to Christ's words in John's gospel, "I am the vine, you are the branches." The vine ends at a stylized flame in gold and orange near the hem, recalling the tongues of fire described in Acts 2 at the descent of the Spirit on the apostles. The embroidery sits as a single vertical column rather than a repeated pattern, so the eye reads it top to bottom as one sequence: dove, vine, flame.

02

Liturgical use

Red-orange sits within the red liturgical colour class. Red is worn for Pentecost Sunday, for the feasts of martyrs and apostles, for Palm Sunday and Good Friday in some traditions, and often for confirmations and ordinations. It is not worn in Ordinary Time, in Advent or Lent, or on white-class solemnities such as Easter or Christmas. Because the tone here leans warmer than a pure scarlet, some clergy prefer it specifically for Pentecost and Holy Spirit-themed services rather than for Passion-themed red days, though that is a matter of personal or parish preference rather than rubric.

03

Who it is for

This stole suits a minister, pastor or deacon leading a Pentecost service, a confirmation, or an ordination where the Holy Spirit is the theme of the day. Its dove-and-flame reading also makes it a fitting ordination or installation gift for clergy in Protestant and ecumenical settings, where a pointed-yoke, single-column design of this kind is common.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders, and it is worn straight down over both shoulders in the presbyteral cut. Any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter a height in the box on this page and it will suggest a length, which you are free to override. The length you choose, the height you give and any notes you add all carry through to your cart, checkout and order confirmation.

FAQs

Before you order

Is red-orange the right shade for Pentecost?

Red-orange sits within the red liturgical colour class used for Pentecost, so it is a correct choice for the day. Some clergy prefer a purer scarlet for Passion-themed red days such as Good Friday, and choose this warmer tone specifically for Pentecost and Holy Spirit services; either is a matter of taste rather than rubric.

What does the back of this stole show?

The back view shows a plain, gold-edged pointed yoke at the neck with the cream-toned reverse of the panels visible, and gold bullion fringe at the ends. There is no dove, vine or flame embroidery on this side; the design runs on the front-facing panels only.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
