Details
About this stole
Pentecost Clergy Stole in Red with Dove and Flame Embroidery pairs a plain red panel with a white dove descending into gold and orange flame at each hem, the classic image of the Spirit's coming. It is designed for Pentecost and the ordinations that so often borrow its imagery.
Design and symbolism
The ground is a deep red satin-faced cloth carrying a fine diamond lattice self-pattern, edged in narrow gold piping. Rather than run the full length of the panel, the embroidery is held back until the lower end: a white and silver dove descends into gold-orange flame shapes near the base of each panel, leaving the rest of the red cloth plain. Gold twisted fringe finishes both hems. The back neck facing breaks from the red body altogether: it is stitched in ivory, edged in gold, with a small gold cross worked at its centre.
The dove descending into fire is the standard image of the Holy Spirit's coming at Pentecost, recalling the tongues of fire described in the Acts of the Apostles. Red stands both for that fire and, in its other uses, for the blood of the martyrs, which is why the colour also appears at ordinations, when the same Spirit is invoked on a new priest or minister.
Liturgical use
Red belongs to Pentecost Sunday, and in many traditions also to Palm Sunday, Good Friday, martyrs' feasts and ordination rites. This particular stole, though, carries dove-and-flame imagery specific to the Holy Spirit rather than a neutral red suited to any red day. It reads most naturally at Pentecost, at an ordination or confirmation, or at a service built around the work of the Spirit, and less naturally on a martyr's feast or a Passion Sunday, where the iconography would not match the day.
Who it is for
A priest, pastor or minister presiding at Pentecost, at an ordination or at a confirmation is the natural wearer. The ivory neck facing with its own small cross is a quiet touch most congregants will not see up close, but the wearer will know it is there.
Length and fit
Standard length is 120 in (305 cm) end to end over both shoulders. Any length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same. Past 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, to a maximum of 160 in. Give us a height on the product page for a suggested length, or enter your own measurement directly; either way it carries through to your cart, checkout and order confirmation.
