Details

About this habit

This habit is cut from a single oatmeal wool throughout, with a plain pointed hood built into the tunic and no separate scapular panel. A flat leather belt closes at the waist in place of a rope cincture. It is offered in standard size codes or tailored to your own measurements.

01

The cut

Body, hood and sleeves are all the same oatmeal cloth, with no colour-blocking anywhere on the garment - the simplest cut in this range. The hood is plain and pointed, set into the neckline rather than built as a separate cape or scapular unit. Sleeves are dropped at the shoulder and cut wide. A dark-brown leather belt wraps once at the waist, with the strap end left hanging rather than a knotted rope tail. The hem flares out with a stepped under-layer showing beneath it, and no pockets are set into the seams.

02

Cloth and finish

This is a wool habit, brushed and matte with a heather texture, in one flat oatmeal tone from collar to hem. The only colour break on the whole garment is the dark leather belt at the waist.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the wool. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

With no scapular and no colour-blocking, this plain cut is not tied to the dress of any one order; it is the simplest option in our range for those who want a single-colour habit rather than a layered or two-tone one. It suits monks, friars, oblates, novices and lay people who keep a rule of life and prefer an unadorned habit for daily wear or prayer.

04

Size and fit

Fourteen graded sizes cover a chest range with a matching robe length: S 34-37 in, M 38-41 in, L 42-45 in, XL 46-49 in, 2XL 50-53 in, each in a length of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62 in measured from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure, the fifteenth option, is priced the same as the L sizes. The whole habit pulls on over the head, with no button, hook or tie at the front.

Compare this plain cut with the layered habits in religious habits, read about wool care on the vestment care page, check your chest size on the measuring guide, or order a custom vestment to your own measurements.

Care

This is a wool habit, so hand wash in cool water or use a gentle wool cycle, and dry flat away from direct heat.

The pale oatmeal tone marks more readily than a darker habit, so store it clean and away from anything that could transfer colour.

Wipe the leather belt with a dry cloth rather than washing it, and keep it away from water.

FAQs

Before you order

Does this habit have a scapular?

No. This is the plainest cut in our range: a single-colour tunic with an integrated hood and no separate scapular panel front or back. If you want a scapular, look to the two-tone habits elsewhere in the range.

Why does this habit have a leather belt instead of a rope?

Most habits in our range use a knotted rope cincture; this one is finished with a flat leather belt instead, wrapped once at the waist. It is simply a different cincture style, not a substitute for one.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
