Details

About this habit

A tan cotton habit with a dark brown scapular running the full length front and back, a hood lined in the same dark brown, and a brown rope cincture at the waist.

01

The cut

The tunic body is tan, with a straight-sided dark brown scapular the full length of the habit, front and back; at the back it runs slightly longer than the tan hem beneath it. The hood is bi-colour, tan on the outer face and dark brown on the lining, which shows when it falls open at the side. The rope cincture is dark brown, matching the scapular rather than the tan body, tied with knotted, tasselled ends. Sleeves are plain tan with no contrast, and there are no pockets.

02

Cloth and finish

This is a light cotton with a smooth, matte finish, noticeably lighter than our wools and easier to wear in warm weather. The contrast between the tan body and dark brown scapular and lining is a clean, firm two-tone rather than a subtle tonal shift.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the cotton. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

The tunic-and-scapular layering here is Benedictine in character, though the tan-and-brown colouring is a choice of ours rather than any order's; Benedictine habits are traditionally black or undyed wool, not tan cotton. It suits monks, friars, oblates, novices and lay people who keep a rule of life, and anyone who wants a two-tone habit for prayer or as a gift marking a profession or ordination. The lighter cotton also makes it a practical choice for a warmer climate or a community that already owns heavier winter habits.

04

Size and fit

Every habit in the range comes in fourteen graded sizes and a Made to Measure option; the price steps up with the chest size, and Made to Measure is priced the same as the L sizes. S is 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in, 2XL 50-53in, and each code carries a robe length of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62in measured from the nape of the neck. Choose Made to Measure if you would rather send your own figures instead of a graded code. The habit pulls on over the head and has no front fastening to manage.

Care

This cotton habit can take more frequent washing than a wool one; wash on a gentle cycle and avoid high heat when drying.

Iron the tan body on a moderate setting, and press the dark brown scapular from the reverse side to keep its colour even.

FAQs

Before you order

Why is the hood a different colour inside?

The hood is bi-colour: tan on the outer face and dark brown on the lining, which you see when it falls open at the side. It matches the dark brown scapular rather than the tan body.

Why is the cincture brown and not tan?

The rope cincture is dark brown to match the scapular and hood lining, rather than the tan body colour. It is a deliberate pairing rather than an inconsistency.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
