Overview
What this piece is
Burgundy velvet stole with a wide gold-bordered band down each panel, embroidered with a jeweled cross, Jerusalem cross, Chi Rho, INRI banner and quatrefoil. For Passiontide, Holy Week, martyr feasts and the Latin Mass.
Symbolism
The Jerusalem cross, four small crosses around one large one, has stood for Christ and the four Gospels since the Crusader era. The Chi Rho is the oldest monogram for Christ, formed from the first two Greek letters of His name, and the INRI banner quotes the inscription Pilate placed over the cross.

Details
About this stole
This priest's stole is cut from burgundy velvet-look cloth, each panel carrying a single wide gold-bordered band that runs its full length: a jeweled cross with radiating rays at the top, then a gold Jerusalem cross, a Chi Rho monogram inside a laurel wreath, an INRI banner, a small cross in a wreath, and a quatrefoil near the fringe.
Design and symbolism
Six motifs run down each panel in one continuous gold-bordered band, finished in ornate gold galloon trim - denser and more heraldic than most of our other red stoles. The Jerusalem cross, four small crosses set around one large one, has stood for Christ and the four Gospels since the Crusader era. The Chi Rho is the oldest monogram for Christ, formed from the first two Greek letters of His name, and the INRI banner quotes the inscription Pilate placed above the cross at the crucifixion. Read top to bottom, the sequence moves from Christ glorified at the top to the instruments of His Passion further down.
Liturgical use
Red covers Passiontide and Holy Week, Pentecost, and the feasts of martyrs, and this stole's dense goldwork and traditional heraldic idiom suit the Latin Mass in particular, though it is equally correct at any red-day Mass in the ordinary form. It is not a stole for Lent's penitential Sundays outside Holy Week, which call for violet, nor for Ordinary Time, which calls for green.
Who it is for
A priest who wants a formal, traditional stole with dense goldwork for the Latin Mass or for major red-letter days in either form of the Roman rite - Palm Sunday, Pentecost, or the feast of a martyr. Its weight and detail also suit it as an ordination gift for a priest drawn to the older tradition.
Length and fit
Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over both shoulders; any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in is priced the same as standard, with $10 added for every further 5 in past that, up to 160 in. The height box on the product page will suggest a length, which you can override - whatever you enter carries through to your cart, checkout and order.
