Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

An ivory clergy stole with a sepia-toned nativity scene on each panel: an angel, two shepherds and a seated figure at a campfire, running from collar to hem.

For Christmas Eve and other services that tell the shepherds' part of the nativity story.

Symbolism

The scene follows Luke 2: an angel appearing to shepherds keeping watch by night, and the shepherds who went to see "this thing that had come to pass". It is a shepherds' nativity rather than a manger or Magi scene.

Details

About this stole

This is a priest's stole in ivory, carrying a sepia-toned pictorial scene on each panel: an angel, two shepherds and their sheep, and, near the hem, a seated shepherd warming his hands at a campfire. It can be tailored to your own length.

01

Design and symbolism

Read from the collar down, the scene opens with a winged angel above scattered clouds, moves to a shepherd standing with a sheep among distant trees, continues with two shepherds kneeling in their robes, crooks in hand, sheep beside them, and closes near the hem with a shepherd seated at a small fire. The whole design is worked in a single sepia palette, browns, tans and a touch of rust at the fire, rather than in full colour, which gives it the look of an old storybook illustration. It follows the shepherds' half of the Christmas story in Luke 2, the angel's announcement and the shepherds who "went with haste" to see what had happened. The image sits flat against the ivory ground rather than standing proud of it. There is no fringe or edge trim on this stole; the ivory ground runs plain to the edge.

02

Liturgical use

White is the colour of Christmas, and this stole's subject ties it specifically to Christmas Eve and to services that tell the shepherds' part of the story, including a Christmas pageant. It is not suited to Lent, to Ordinary Time, or to a funeral, where its narrative would be out of place; keep it for the Christmas season proper.

03

Who it is for

A priest, pastor or minister leading a Christmas Eve service, a candlelight vigil, or a children's nativity pageant will find the sequence reads clearly from a distance, panel by panel, as the story is told.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm) end to end over both shoulders. Made-to-measure lengths from 84 in to 120 in cost the same as standard; beyond that, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. Give your height in the box above for a suggested length, which you can adjust; the figure you confirm carries through to your cart, checkout and order.

Care

This stole has no fringe or trim, so care centres on the pale ground and the pictorial design. Dry clean only.

  • Store rolled, not folded, so the sepia scene does not crease across a fold line
  • Keep out of direct sunlight, which marks pale ivory fabric and can fade the sepia tones unevenly
  • Press from the reverse only, on a low setting, to protect the pictorial scene
  • Handle with clean, dry hands, since ivory fabric shows marks readily

FAQs

Before you order

Is this stole only for Christmas Eve?

Its subject is Christmas, so it belongs to the Christmas season generally, not to Christmas Eve alone. It suits Christmas Day services and other Christmastide occasions as well, and a nativity or Christmas pageant staged at another point in the season.

It is not intended for Lent, Ordinary Time, or occasions such as a funeral, where a narrative shepherds' scene would not fit the day.

Is the nativity design shown in full colour?

No. The scene is worked in a single sepia palette - browns, tans and a touch of rust at the campfire - rather than full colour. This gives it a quieter, storybook-illustration look rather than a bright pictorial scene.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
