Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

Ivory satin stole with a black velvet-look neckband, embroidered with a vine of Easter lilies, lily-of-the-valley, a gold star and a ribbon bow. For Easter, Marian feasts, weddings and ordinations.

Symbolism

The Easter lily is the standard flower of the Resurrection in Western churches, and the smaller lily-of-the-valley strengthens the same reading of purity and new life. The star and the gold bow finishing the vine are decorative rather than doctrinal.

Details

About this stole

This priest's stole is worked in ivory satin-look cloth, with a black velvet-look neckband trimmed in gold. Each panel carries a single vertical vine of Easter lilies and smaller lily-of-the-valley bell flowers, topped by a small gold star and finished at the base with a gold ribbon bow.

01

Design and symbolism

The vine is continuous rather than a repeating pattern, running the full length of each panel in cream and sage-green thread against the ivory ground, bordered in gold piping. A small gold star sits at the top of the vine, and a gold bow finishes it at the hem - both decorative details rather than fixed symbols in their own right. The Easter lily is the standard flower of the Resurrection in Western churches, and the lily-of-the-valley beside it strengthens the same reading of purity and new life rather than introducing a separate meaning.

02

Liturgical use

White and ivory belong to Easter and to Marian feasts, and this stole's floral, devotional character suits both well. It also works for weddings and ordinations, where white is customary in most Western traditions regardless of the season elsewhere in the calendar. Some parishes also permit ivory pieces at funerals that emphasise resurrection hope rather than mourning, though black or violet remains more common for that occasion. It is not the stole for Lent, Advent or the long green stretch of Ordinary Time.

03

Who it is for

A priest, minister or deacon who wants a softer, botanical alternative to the heraldic cross-and-monogram stoles in the white and gold class, for Easter Sundays, Marian feast days, weddings and ordinations. The black velvet neckband gives it a more tailored, formal look on the shoulders than an all-ivory piece, which some clergy prefer for photographs and processions.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured over both shoulders, with any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in priced the same as standard. Beyond 120 in, $10 is added for each further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter your height on the product page for a suggested length, and adjust it if you prefer - your figure carries through to the cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only, and mention the black velvet-look neckband to your cleaner so it is treated separately from the ivory body.

Store rolled, not folded, away from direct sunlight.

Press the satin panels from the reverse side on a low setting; do not press the velvet neckband at all.

FAQs

Before you order

Why are there two different flowers on this stole?

The vine combines Easter lilies with the smaller, bell-shaped lily-of-the-valley rather than showing lilies alone. Both are white flowers associated in Western devotional art with purity and new life, so they reinforce the same meaning rather than adding a separate one.

It is worth knowing the vine is not single-flower, since a name that mentions only 'lily' can suggest a simpler design than the one actually embroidered here.

Why is the neckband black on an ivory stole?

It is a design and contrast choice rather than a liturgical one. The black velvet-look yoke with its small gold-outlined emblem frames the shoulders and gives the piece a more tailored line where it meets the collar.

It does not change the stole's liturgical classification, which is set by the ivory body: this remains a white-class stole for Easter, Marian feasts, weddings and ordinations.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
