Details

About this habit

This heather-grey habit pairs a full tunic with a scapular cut from the same cloth, so the panel reads as texture rather than contrast - a tonal, Benedictine-style construction, hooded, pulling on over the head.

01

The cut

A full-length under-tunic carries a separate scapular, front and back, that hangs from the shoulders to roughly mid-calf; because it is cut from the same grey cloth as the tunic beneath, the join shows only as a stepped hemline rather than a change of colour. The hood is pointed, with a deep centre-back seam that gives it real depth rather than a shallow cowl, and it is attached directly to the scapular. Sleeves are wide and bell-shaped. The habit is scapular, tunic and hood only, and pulls on over the head with no front fastening.

02

Cloth and finish

The cloth is cotton with a smooth, matte, twill-like face, medium in weight - enough body to hold the scapular's drape without the tunic beneath going limp. Colour is a single heather grey throughout, tunic and scapular alike, so the garment reads as one tonal piece rather than two colours stitched together.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the cotton. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

Tunic, tonal scapular and pointed hood together are the classic shape of Benedictine dress, so we describe this cut as Benedictine in character. That is a description of the silhouette, not a claim that any abbey or congregation wears this exact habit - the grey is our own choice, not a colour tied to one order. It suits monks, oblates, novices and lay people who follow a rule of life and want a habit built to that same three-part shape.

04

Size and fit

Sizing runs across fourteen graded codes, each a chest range paired with a finished robe length: S is 34-37 in, M 38-41 in, L 42-45 in, XL 46-49 in, 2XL 50-53 in, with lengths of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62 in from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure, our fifteenth option, is priced the same as the L sizes and is built entirely to your own figures. The habit pulls on over the head; there is no front fastening.

Compare the tonal scapular against our two-tone habits in religious habits, check how we grade cotton against wool on the fabric guide, and use the measuring guide before you choose Made to Measure, or ask about a custom vestment.

Care

This cotton habit can be machine washed on a gentle, cool cycle.

Dry flat or on a hanger rather than tumble drying, to keep the scapular hanging true against the tunic beneath it.

A cool iron is enough for touch-ups; avoid pressing hard seams into the hood.

FAQs

Before you order

Why is the scapular the same colour as the tunic?

We cut this habit's scapular from the same bolt of grey cloth as the tunic beneath it, so the two blend rather than contrast. You can still see where the scapular sits, since its hem falls a little higher than the tunic's own hem, but there is no colour break between the layers.

Does this habit come with a cincture?

No cincture is shown with this particular habit, and we have not added one that was not present in the reference photographs. If you would like a rope cincture added, get in touch before ordering and we can discuss it as a custom addition.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
