Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Buying as a gift? Give us the wearer's height and we will size it from the chart.

What this piece is

For Ordinary Time wear and as an ordination or pastoral gift, cut to your length.

Symbolism

The Tree of Life recalls Genesis and Revelation, where a tree bearing fruit and leaves stands for the life God gives and sustains. Its stained-glass rendering echoes the coloured windows of a church nave.

Details

About this stole

This is a pastor's or priest's stole in a deep green ground, carrying a stained-glass-style Tree of Life on each front panel, trunk to crown, finished with gold cord edging and gold bullion fringe. It can be tailored to your own length.

01

Design and symbolism

Each panel carries a single tree, worked as a leaded-glass image rather than a naturalistic drawing: a dark brown trunk and branches hold panes of green foliage broken up by small segments of gold, blue and red, each pane outlined in black in the manner of a church window. The flat colour and crisp black lines give the tree its stained-glass character: the design sits flat against the ground rather than standing proud of it, like a leaded-glass window rather than a raised embroidered scene. The Tree of Life is a long-standing image in Christian art, drawn from the tree of Genesis and the tree "for the healing of the nations" in Revelation 22. Gold cord frames both panels and a gold bullion fringe finishes the hem.

02

Liturgical use

Green is the colour of Ordinary Time, the long stretches of the church year between the great seasons: after Epiphany and again after Pentecost. It is not worn in Advent, Lent, Christmastide or Eastertide, and not on days that call for white, red or violet. Within that wide use, the stole suits an ordinary Sunday, a weekday service, or any occasion that does not call for a festal colour.

03

Who it is for

Cut and finished as a single presbyteral stole, it suits a priest or pastor for regular Sunday wear, and works well as a gift marking an ordination or an anniversary in ministry, since green sees more use across the calendar than any festal colour.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over both shoulders. Any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter a height in the box on this page and it will suggest a length, which you are free to override; the figure you confirm travels through to your cart, checkout and order.

Care

This stole has a saturated green ground and a gold bullion fringe. Dry clean only.

  • Store rolled, not folded, so the panels and fringe keep their shape
  • Keep out of direct sunlight; strong light can fade the green dye and dull the gold thread
  • Press from the reverse on a low setting, and never press directly over the tree panel
  • Handle the fringed ends gently; bullion fringe can snag on rough surfaces

FAQs

Before you order

When is this green stole appropriate to wear?

Green belongs to Ordinary Time: the weeks after Epiphany and the longer stretch after Pentecost. It is the right choice for a regular Sunday or weekday service that falls outside Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, Easter or a feast day calling for a different colour.

It is not correct for those seasons or feasts, even as a personal preference; the colour follows the calendar, not the wearer.

Is the Tree of Life panel raised embroidery?

No. The design sits flat against the ground rather than standing proud of it, with flat colour and crisp black outlines rather than raised stitch texture, in keeping with its stained-glass-style look.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
