Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

A green Good Shepherd stole with a trail of embroidered sheep following a gold crook, ending in a hillside landscape.

Suited to Ordinary Time services on the Good Shepherd theme, and to pastoral and ordination gifts.

Symbolism

The shepherd's crook and the sheep that follow it recall Christ's words 'I am the good shepherd' (John 10) and the parable of the lost sheep sought and carried home.

The landscape at the hem sets that search in an open, wandering countryside.

Details

About this stole

This Good Shepherd stole follows a shepherd's crook down each green panel, trailed by a line of sheep that grow smaller toward the hem, where the embroidery opens into a hillside landscape.

01

Design and symbolism

A single sheep stands at the top of each panel, and below it a gold crook winds downward with a procession of smaller sheep in cream and ivory thread following behind it. At the hem, the embroidery opens out into rolling hills and a winding stream or path in blue-grey and tan. Together the images set out the Good Shepherd parable directly: the crook is the shepherd's own, the sheep that follow are the flock, and the diminishing scale of each sheep down the panel reads as the flock being led onward, out into open country. The back of the stole is left in plain green satin with gold piping at the edge, and the ends finish straight, without fringe.

02

Liturgical use

This stole is green, the colour of Ordinary Time. Worth noting for a shepherd-themed piece: in traditions that follow the Revised Common Lectionary, Good Shepherd Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday of Easter, kept in white as part of the Easter season, not green — so this is not the stole for that particular Sunday if your parish observes liturgical colour strictly. It suits the Good Shepherd theme worked out on an ordinary green Sunday instead, and it reads equally well at a pastoral-care service, an installation or an ordination, where the shepherd image speaks to the ministry being begun or continued.

03

Who it is for

A pastor, priest or minister who wants the Good Shepherd imagery for Ordinary Time preaching, pastoral occasions, or as a gift marking the start of a pastoral charge.

04

Length and fit

Standard length is 120 in (305 cm), finished end to end over both shoulders, worn straight down in a presbyteral cut. Made-to-measure lengths from 84 in to 120 in are priced the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added per further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter your height on this page for a suggested length, or set your own figure — it travels with your order through to checkout.

FAQs

Before you order

Is this the right stole for Good Shepherd Sunday?

Only if your tradition does not tie that Sunday to a specific colour. In churches that follow the Revised Common Lectionary, Good Shepherd Sunday falls in Eastertide and is kept in white, not green, so a strict reading of the colour sequence would call for a white stole that day.

This green piece is better suited to a Good Shepherd sermon or theme on an ordinary green Sunday, or to a pastoral or ordination occasion.

Does this stole have fringe on the ends?

No. The ends are finished straight and plain, without fringe.

That keeps the focus on the crook-and-sheep embroidery running down each panel.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
