Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

This green stole runs wheat and grapevine down each front panel and keeps a single chalice-and-host motif for the back, at the collar.

01

Design and symbolism

Down each panel, gold wheat sprigs lead into a grapevine with leaves and clusters shaded in gold, brown and ivory, ending near the hem in a bound wheat sheaf and a small gold cross set just above the fringe. Wheat and the vine stand together for bread and wine, the raw elements of Communion. The chalice, holding a white host, is embroidered only at the back collar, on the green satin close to the neck — a detail worn rather than shown, seen by the wearer and by anyone standing directly behind. Thread colours through the vine shift from gold into brown and ivory as the clusters ripen down the panel, giving the embroidery real depth rather than a single flat tone. The ends finish in gold fringe.

02

Liturgical use

Green is the colour of Ordinary Time, the largest stretch of the church year and the one without a single dominant feast of its own. This is a working Communion stole built for that long run of Sundays; it does not belong to Advent, Lent, Christmas or Easter, which take their own colours, and a parish that keeps a strict colour sequence should reserve it for the weeks outside those named seasons.

03

Who it is for

A priest, pastor or minister who presides at Communion regularly through Ordinary Time, and who wants the chalice symbolism kept discreet rather than displayed on the front. It also suits a clergyperson who already owns a more elaborate Eucharistic stole and wants a second, quieter piece for everyday Sunday use.

04

Length and fit

Standard length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over both shoulders in a presbyteral cut, worn straight down each side. Made-to-measure lengths from 84 in to 120 in are priced the same as standard, and each further 5 in past 120 in, to 160 in, adds $10. The height box on this page suggests a length from your height, and you can override it — the length, height and any notes you give travel through to the cart, checkout and order.

This design sits alongside a related grapevine-and-cross stole in our green vestments collection, distinguished by its back-collar chalice; see the rest of our Ordinary Time vestments and clergy stoles, or read the vestment glossary.

FAQs

Before you order

Why is the chalice only on the back of this stole?

The chalice and host are embroidered on the green satin at the back collar, a spot seen by the wearer and by anyone standing directly behind, rather than displayed on the front panels.

The front carries the wheat and grapevine sequence instead, so the Eucharistic reference is present throughout the piece without repeating the same motif twice.

How does this compare to your other green grapevine stole?

This one keeps its chalice-and-host motif reserved for the back collar and finishes in plain gold fringe, with a small cross placed near the hem on the front.

The other green grapevine stole in this range instead runs its embroidery over the shoulder onto the back and finishes in a gold beaded fringe. Both share the same wheat-and-vine vocabulary on the front panels.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
