Details

About this cassock

A forest green cassock robe with gold buttons down the front, gold crosses embroidered on the chest panels, gold-fringed tassels and a gold band at the hem.

01

The cut

The robe is a straight full-length cassock with a stand collar marked by a small gold cross, and a row of gold buttons running the length of the centre front. Two embroidered gold crosses sit on the front panels at chest height, each finished below with a gold fringe. Narrow gold piping runs around each cuff and a wider gold band closes the hem, so the gold frames the robe top and bottom. Sleeves are long and straight. The back is plain with a centre vent through the skirt.

02

Cloth and finish

Made in cotton with a matte face. The green is a deep forest that keeps the gold reading as gold rather than as a yellow flash, which is the usual failure of gold trim on a lighter ground. The gold work is substantial enough to read from the back of a church without tipping the robe into costume.

03

Robe only, or robe and stole

The Style dropdown decides what ships. Robe Only is the cassock as photographed, with its gold buttons, embroidered crosses and fringed tassels. Robe + Stole adds a separate matching stole cut from the same cloth and worked in the same gold, and adds $80 at every size code.

04

Who wears it

Green is worn through Ordinary Time, the longest stretch of the church year, and gold is the colour of the highest feasts in the Western calendar. A green robe with substantial gold work therefore sits between the two: dressed enough for a patronal festival, an anniversary or an installation, but still correct for a green Sunday. It is worn by priests, pastors, ministers and bishops alike.

05

Size and fit

The robe is cut to fourteen graded size codes, each pairing a chest measurement with a finished length. S covers a 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in and 2XL 50-53in; the number after the letter is the robe length in inches from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure is priced at the same step as the L sizes and cut to your own figures.

Care

Dry clean only. There is gold thread, gold piping and fringe on this robe, and none of it survives a domestic wash cycle.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, working around the buttons and never over the embroidery. Comb the fringe straight with your fingers after cleaning and hang the robe full length so the tassels are not crushed.

FAQs

Before you order

What is the difference between Robe Only and Robe + Stole?

Robe Only is the robe by itself, with whatever belt, sash or cincture is listed in the specifications for that robe. Robe + Stole adds the matching stole shown in the photographs, cut and finished to the same cloth and trim as the robe, and adds $80 to the price at every size code.

The choice is made in the Style dropdown on this page and the price updates as soon as you change it. If you already own a stole in the right liturgical colour, Robe Only is the sensible choice; if you want the two pieces matched by the same hand in the same cloth, take the pair.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears chancel steps more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How does the cassock robe fasten, and what is worn under it?

The robe fastens down the front, and the specifications on this page say whether that is a button placket or a concealed closure. It is cut with ease so it hangs cleanly over an ordinary shirt and clergy collar, or over a clergy shirt, without pulling across the chest when you raise your arms to preach.

Where a belt, sash or cincture is included it ties or buckles at the natural waist. A stole is worn over the robe, not under it, and goes on last.

How should the robe be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning, and it is the only sensible route for any robe with embroidery or metallic trim. Hang the robe full length on a broad-shouldered hanger between services rather than folding it, so no crease sets across the skirt.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never directly over embroidery or braid, and keep coloured robes out of direct sunlight in storage. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.

How long will my robe take to arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 5 to 7 days, and delivery takes a further 10 to 15 days after dispatch. Choosing Robe + Stole does not change the dispatch time.

If you are ordering for a specific ordination, installation or feast day, tell us the date in the order notes and we will confirm by email whether it can be met.
