Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

This Roman-style priest stole pairs a deep red shoulder yoke with a wide navy velvet-look band running the length of each panel, densely embroidered in gold metallic thread with scrollwork and a repeating small gemmed cross. A single ringed, Celtic-style cross is worked in gold on the back neck yoke.

01

Design and symbolism

The gold embroidery on the navy bands is a continuous scrollwork pattern interrupted by a small, gemmed Latin cross repeated down the length of each panel; small red and purple gem-like accents catch the light within the scrolling. At the centre back, a single ringed cross in the Celtic style is set on the red yoke on its own, distinct from the repeating crosses on the front bands. Read that way, "Celtic cross" describes one specific detail at the neck rather than the whole pattern, and this listing keeps that distinction rather than implying every cross on the stole is a Celtic one.

02

Liturgical use

Red belongs to the red liturgical colour class: Pentecost Sunday, the feasts of martyrs and apostles, and, in some traditions, Palm Sunday and Good Friday. It is not worn in Ordinary Time, Advent, Lent, or on white-class solemnities. The velvet-look banding and dense gold work here place it firmly in the traditional Roman style, suited to a solemn red-class Mass rather than an everyday parish service.

03

Who it is for

A priest in a traditional Catholic or high-church Anglican setting who wants an ornamented stole for red-class solemnities, or a considered ordination gift for a priest who will value the weight and formality of the design.

04

Length and fit

The standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm) end to end over the shoulders, worn straight down in the presbyteral cut. Made-to-measure lengths from 84 in to 120 in cost the same as standard, and lengths beyond 120 in, up to 160 in, add $10 for every further 5 in. Enter your height on this page for a suggested length, and adjust it if you prefer; the figure you settle on, together with your height and any notes, carries through your cart and order.

Care

Dry clean only, and mention the velvet-look band to your cleaner, since velvet crushes under heat and pressure.

Store rolled, never folded, to keep the pile even, and keep out of direct sunlight. Do not press the navy band directly; if pressing is needed, work from the reverse and keep the iron off the velvet-look surface.

FAQs

Before you order

Where exactly is the Celtic cross on this stole?

The single ringed, Celtic-style cross sits on the red yoke at the centre back neck. The crosses repeated down the front navy bands are small gemmed Latin crosses within the scrollwork, not Celtic crosses, so only the back-neck cross carries that specific ringed design.

Does this suit an Anglican or Lutheran priest, not just Catholic?

Yes. Traditional Roman-style red vestments of this kind are used across Catholic, Anglo-Catholic and some Lutheran liturgical traditions for red-class days such as Pentecost and martyrs' feasts, alongside their more familiar place in Roman Catholic use.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
