Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Buying as a gift? Give us the wearer's height and we will size it from the chart.

Overview

What this piece is

A priest's Eucharistic stole in burgundy velvet with gold grapevine and wheat embroidery, and a small Celtic cross at the back collar.

Worn for Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost and the feasts of martyrs, or given as an ordination gift.

Symbolism

Grapevine and wheat are the traditional emblems of the bread and wine of the Eucharist.

The Celtic cross at the back collar, worn against the priest rather than shown to the congregation, marks the wearer's own faith rather than the rite being celebrated.

Details

About this stole

This Eucharistic stole pairs burgundy velvet with a running gold grapevine and wheat sprig, worked the full length of each panel, and finishes with a small gold Celtic cross set into the back collar.

01

Design and symbolism

Each velvet panel opens with a coil of gold-thread vine carrying leaves and grape clusters from shoulder to hem, joined lower down by a single wheat sprig. Grapes and wheat together are the oldest visual shorthand for the Eucharist: the fruit of the vine and the work of human hands become wine and bread on the altar. The shoulders, neck and back of the stole are cut in plain ivory satin, so the eye rests before it meets the small gold Celtic cross embroidered on a burgundy velvet patch at the back collar — a quiet detail worn by the priest rather than shown to the congregation. The ends close in gold bullion fringe, in keeping with the weight of the velvet ground.

02

Liturgical use

Burgundy reads as a deep shade of red rather than a separate liturgical colour, and red is the colour of the Passion, the Holy Spirit and the blood of the martyrs. In the Roman calendar it is worn on Palm Sunday and Good Friday, at Pentecost, and on the feast days of apostles and martyrs; in wider ecumenical use it also marks ordinations and confirmations in some traditions. This is not a stole for Ordinary Time, which takes green, nor for Lent proper or Advent, which in most Western traditions take violet. Where a parish distinguishes Passiontide red from festal scarlet, this velvet, deep-toned burgundy sits at the sombre end of that range.

03

Who it is for

The stole is cut for a priest and suits any Eucharistic celebration on a red-class day — Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost Sunday, or the feast of a martyr or apostle. It also works well as an ordination gift for a priest or pastor who will vest for Communion often, given the direct chalice-and-bread symbolism of the vine and wheat.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over both shoulders, and this is a presbyteral cut worn straight down on each side. Any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter a height in the box on this page and it will suggest a length, which can be overridden — the exact length, the height given and any notes travel through to the cart, checkout and order.

FAQs

Before you order

Can this stole be worn on days other than red feasts?

Red is worn on specific days rather than across a season: Palm Sunday, Good Friday in Western traditions that keep it, Pentecost Sunday, and the feast days of apostles and martyrs.

Outside those days this stole would be out of step with the usual colour sequence, so it is not a general-purpose piece in the way a green Ordinary Time stole is.

What does the small Celtic cross at the back mean?

It is a ringed Celtic cross worked on a burgundy velvet patch at the back collar, in the position where only the priest sees it while wearing the stole.

It is a personal devotional detail rather than a sign shown to the congregation, and it does not carry a different meaning from the grapevine and wheat embroidered on the front.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
