Details
About this habit
A rust-burgundy habit with a round shoulder cape worked in gold sunburst embroidery, tied at the waist with a matching fabric cord.
The cut
Instead of a scapular or a capelet, this habit is layered with a pellegrina, a short round cape that sits over the shoulders and covers the chest and back to about the same depth all the way round. A pointed hood is set above it. Rather than a rope, the waist is closed with a thin cord in the same cloth as the tunic, tied in a simple knot. The sleeves keep the same wide bell shape as our other habits. Gold topstitching runs down the centre front seam and along the sides as a contrast line against the burgundy ground. There are no pockets, and the hem falls to the floor. The habit pulls on over the head.
Cloth and finish
The cotton has a coarse, slubby weave, closer to a rough linen look than a smooth habit cloth, and wrinkles readily. The ground colour sits between rust and burgundy-brown. Across the pellegrina, front and back, gold thread is worked into a sunburst of rays that spreads out from the neckline; the same gold appears again in the topstitched seams. Nothing else on the tunic is decorated.
This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the cotton. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.
Who wears it
This is not the dress of a named historical order: a pellegrina worked with a radiating sunburst is decorative rather than a documented habit pattern, so the colouring and ornament here are our own. A sunburst of this kind draws on an old Christian visual habit of showing divine glory as radiating light, echoed in the rays set around a monstrance in Eucharistic adoration. The habit suits lay people and oblates who want a habit marked with that symbol for prayer, and communities or individuals who have adopted a pellegrina as part of their own dress rather than an inherited one.
Size and fit
Fourteen graded sizes are cut, each a chest range with a robe length: S 34-37in, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in, 2XL 50-53in, with lengths of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62in measured from the nape of the neck to the hem. A fifteenth option, Made to Measure, is priced the same as the L sizes. The front carries no fastening at all; the habit is put on over the head.
