Details

About this cassock

A black cassock robe faced in purple at the collar and edged in gold, cut to pair with a purple stole worked in gold crosses for Lent and Advent.

01

The cut

The robe is a straight full-length cassock with a centre-front closure and a stand collar faced in purple, so the liturgical colour shows at the throat even when the stole is not worn. A fine gold cord runs along the collar edge and around each cuff, and the same gold picks out the front edge. Sleeves are long and straight. The back is cut plain with a single centre vent through the skirt, which is what lets the robe fall closed when you stand still and move freely when you walk. There is no hood and no belt.

02

The stole

The matching stole is purple, the colour both Lent and Advent share in the Western calendar. It is edged in gold on both long sides, carries a gold Greek-key band at each end, and is worked with a gold cross low on each tail and a third at the neck. It hangs to roughly the same depth as the robe's skirt break, so it reads as one piece with the robe rather than as an afterthought.

03

Cloth and finish

Both pieces are made in cotton with a matte face. The black holds its depth under chancel lighting without flashing, and the purple is a true liturgical violet rather than a blue-leaning shade, which matters when the robe is seen next to an altar frontal or a purple parament.

04

Robe only, or robe and stole

The Style dropdown decides what ships. Robe Only is the black cassock with its purple collar facing and gold trim, without the stole. Robe + Stole adds the purple cross stole shown in the photographs and adds $80 at every size code. The photographs show the pair.

05

Who wears it

Purple is the penitential colour of Lent and the colour of preparation in Advent across Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and Methodist practice, and this pairing is cut for a priest, pastor or minister who wants one robe that carries the season at the collar. Purple is also used for funerals in traditions that have moved away from black.

06

Size and fit

The robe is cut to fourteen graded size codes, each pairing a chest measurement with a finished length. S covers a 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in and 2XL 50-53in; the number after the letter is the robe length in inches from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure is priced at the same step as the L sizes and cut to your own figures.

Care

Dry clean only. The gold cord and the embroidered crosses on the stole will not survive a domestic wash cycle, and the purple will bleed onto the black if the two are washed together.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never directly over the gold. Hang the robe full length and store the stole flat or loosely rolled so no crease sets across the embroidery.

FAQs

Before you order

What is the difference between Robe Only and Robe + Stole?

Robe Only is the robe by itself, with whatever belt, sash or cincture is listed in the specifications for that robe. Robe + Stole adds the matching stole shown in the photographs, cut and finished to the same cloth and trim as the robe, and adds $80 to the price at every size code.

The choice is made in the Style dropdown on this page and the price updates as soon as you change it. If you already own a stole in the right liturgical colour, Robe Only is the sensible choice; if you want the two pieces matched by the same hand in the same cloth, take the pair.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears chancel steps more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How does the cassock robe fasten, and what is worn under it?

The robe fastens down the front, and the specifications on this page say whether that is a button placket or a concealed closure. It is cut with ease so it hangs cleanly over an ordinary shirt and clergy collar, or over a clergy shirt, without pulling across the chest when you raise your arms to preach.

Where a belt, sash or cincture is included it ties or buckles at the natural waist. A stole is worn over the robe, not under it, and goes on last.

How should the robe be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning, and it is the only sensible route for any robe with embroidery or metallic trim. Hang the robe full length on a broad-shouldered hanger between services rather than folding it, so no crease sets across the skirt.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never directly over embroidery or braid, and keep coloured robes out of direct sunlight in storage. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.

How long will my robe take to arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 5 to 7 days, and delivery takes a further 10 to 15 days after dispatch. Choosing Robe + Stole does not change the dispatch time.

If you are ordering for a specific ordination, installation or feast day, tell us the date in the order notes and we will confirm by email whether it can be met.
