Details

About this cassock

A full-length black cassock robe with a stand collar and a wide matching sash belt finished with a hanging tassel, offered in your size code or tailored to your own measurements.

01

The cut

The robe runs in one unbroken line from the stand collar to the hem and closes down the centre front. Sleeves are set long and straight, finishing at the wrist without a turned cuff. A wide sash in the same black cloth wraps the natural waist and ties at one side, its tasselled end left hanging against the skirt; the back view shows the sash carried straight across without gathering. The skirt is cut with enough fullness to walk and climb chancel steps in, and the hem is set to clear the shoe rather than pool on the floor. There is no hood, no scapular and no applied trim anywhere on the garment.

02

Cloth and finish

This robe is made in cotton with a matte face, so it reads as solid black under daylight and under stage lighting instead of throwing a sheen back at the camera. The cloth carries enough weight to hang straight from the shoulder and hold the line of the skirt while you move. Colour is black throughout, collar, sleeves and sash included, with no contrast panel or piping.

03

Robe only, or robe and stole

The Style dropdown on this page sets what ships. Robe Only is the cassock and its sash belt. Robe + Stole adds a matching stole made in the same cloth and finished by the same hand, and adds $80 at every size code. Both are cut to the size you choose, and adding the stole does not change the dispatch time.

04

Who wears it

A plain black cassock crosses tradition more easily than any other garment in Christian ministry. It is worn by Catholic and Anglican priests as everyday choir and street dress, by Protestant pastors and ministers in the pulpit, and by seminarians and servers. Because it carries no denominational insignia, it commits the wearer to no particular rite.

05

Size and fit

The robe is cut to fourteen graded size codes, each pairing a chest measurement with a finished length. S covers a 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in and 2XL 50-53in; the number after the letter, 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62, is the robe length in inches measured from the nape of the neck to the hem. A fifteenth option, Made to Measure, is priced at the same step as the L sizes and cut to the figures you send us.

Care

Dry cleaning is the safest route. If you would rather launder the robe at home, use a gentle cool cycle and line dry out of direct sun so the black does not fade towards grey.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and hang the robe full length on a broad-shouldered hanger between services rather than folding it. Store the sash loosely rolled so the tassel does not crush.

FAQs

Before you order

What is the difference between Robe Only and Robe + Stole?

Robe Only is the robe by itself, with whatever belt, sash or cincture is listed in the specifications for that robe. Robe + Stole adds the matching stole shown in the photographs, cut and finished to the same cloth and trim as the robe, and adds $80 to the price at every size code.

The choice is made in the Style dropdown on this page and the price updates as soon as you change it. If you already own a stole in the right liturgical colour, Robe Only is the sensible choice; if you want the two pieces matched by the same hand in the same cloth, take the pair.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears chancel steps more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How does the cassock robe fasten, and what is worn under it?

The robe fastens down the front, and the specifications on this page say whether that is a button placket or a concealed closure. It is cut with ease so it hangs cleanly over an ordinary shirt and clergy collar, or over a clergy shirt, without pulling across the chest when you raise your arms to preach.

Where a belt, sash or cincture is included it ties or buckles at the natural waist. A stole is worn over the robe, not under it, and goes on last.

How should the robe be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning, and it is the only sensible route for any robe with embroidery or metallic trim. Hang the robe full length on a broad-shouldered hanger between services rather than folding it, so no crease sets across the skirt.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never directly over embroidery or braid, and keep coloured robes out of direct sunlight in storage. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.

How long will my robe take to arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 5 to 7 days, and delivery takes a further 10 to 15 days after dispatch. Choosing Robe + Stole does not change the dispatch time.

If you are ordering for a specific ordination, installation or feast day, tell us the date in the order notes and we will confirm by email whether it can be met.
