How to measure

Measure over the alb you will wear.

Symbolism

The cross in rays proclaims Christ's victory over death, and the palms are the martyrs' sign of that victory.

Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

A black gothic chasuble for funerals and Masses for the dead, cut from black satin with a woven damask pattern and set with a black velvet orphrey embroidered entirely in silver-coloured thread. The back carries a Y-shaped orphrey with a radiant cross, palms and white lilies; the front carries a straight column with a cross, a climbing lily vine and gothic arches.

01

The embroidery

On the back, the yoke of the Y frames a Latin cross inside a pointed oval of silver rays, flanked by palm fronds and white lilies. Below it the column continues with lilies and a palm, then three gothic arches, each enclosing small crosses, and closes at the hem with an anchor.

The front column opens with a budded cross at the collar. A lily vine climbs beneath it, opening into white lilies, and the panel ends in a pair of gothic arches. Every band is edged in silver-coloured braid, and the outer hem is bound in grey.

02

Liturgical use

Black is the colour of mourning in the Roman Rite and in many Anglican and Lutheran churches. This chasuble is made for funeral Masses, Requiem Masses and All Souls' Day (2 November), and for Masses for the dead through the year. Where local custom uses violet or white at funerals instead, a black vestment may still be worn wherever it is permitted.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms, with no fastening. The body is black satin with a woven damask pattern; the orphreys are black velvet, edged in silver-coloured braid, with the embroidery stitched into the velvet. The chasuble is lined in grey satin.

Care

Dry clean only. Tell the cleaner the vestment carries velvet orphreys with dense metallic embroidery, so they must not be pressed flat.

  • Velvet crushes where it is folded. Hang on a broad padded hanger and never fold across the orphrey.
  • Silver-coloured thread dulls with handling and damp air. Store in a closed garment bag.
  • Lift the velvet pile with light steam held away from the cloth rather than pressing it.

FAQs

Before you order

Should I choose a standard size or Made to Measure?

A standard size chosen by height suits most priests. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges, want a particular hem length, or are buying a gift and know the wearer's measurements. Enter the measurements on this page before adding to cart. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How should I care for an embroidered satin chasuble?

Dry clean only. Tell the cleaner the vestment carries dense metallic and coloured embroidery, so the orphrey must not be pressed flat.

  • Hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger and never fold it across the embroidered panel.
  • Light colours yellow and deep colours fade in strong light, so keep it in a closed garment bag away from daylight.
  • Release creases with light steam held away from the cloth rather than an iron.
How long will delivery take, and will I pay duties?

Orders are dispatched within 5–7 business days. Standard delivery then takes an estimated 10–15 business days to the United States and up to 21 business days elsewhere; a faster Rush option is offered at checkout.

We pay duties and import taxes on orders to the US, UK and Europe. For other countries, local customs charges may apply on arrival. If you need the chasuble for a particular date, write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering.
