Overview

What this piece is

An ivory gothic chasuble for Baptism, embroidered front and back with the Holy Spirit dove in gold rays, a gold scallop shell pouring water, and the river Jordan in aqua and silver.

Lined in aqua satin. A white-class vestment for the Baptism of the Lord, baptismal Masses and the Easter season. Offered in four standard sizes, or tailored to your own measurements; Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

Symbolism

The dove descending in light recalls the Spirit coming down on Christ at his baptism in the Jordan (Matthew 3:16).

The scallop shell is the traditional vessel for pouring baptismal water, and the three drops name the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The river, with its fish, is the Jordan and the living water of the font.

Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

An ivory gothic chasuble made for the Sacrament of Baptism. A full-length orphrey runs from collar to hem on the front and the back, embroidered with the descending dove of the Holy Spirit in a burst of gold-coloured rays, a gold scallop shell pouring three drops of water, and the waters of the Jordan flowing in aqua and silver down to the hem.

01

The embroidery

At the top of the orphrey the white dove descends with outstretched wings inside long gold-coloured rays. Below it sits a large scallop shell worked in gold-coloured thread, with three pearl-like drops falling from its lip. From there the river begins: ribbons of aqua, teal and silver-coloured thread wind down the panel, with small fish and reeds along the banks near the hem. The orphrey is edged on both sides with gold-coloured braid, and the outer hem is finished with a twisted cord.

The same design is carried on the front and the back, so the congregation sees the full story whether the priest faces them or the font. The chasuble is lined in aqua satin, which shows at the sleeves and hem as the vestment moves.

02

Liturgical use

Ivory belongs to the white class of liturgical colours. This chasuble is made first for the Baptism of the Lord, for Masses at which Baptism is celebrated, and for the Easter Vigil and the Easter season, when the Church returns again and again to the waters of the font. Because it is white-class it is also correct on any day that calls for white or gold.

03

Cut and construction

Full gothic cut, wide across the shoulders and falling in a deep curve over the arms, with no fastening. The body is ivory satin with a soft woven texture, the orphrey is satin worked with gold-coloured, silver-coloured and coloured thread, and the whole is lined in aqua satin.

  • Ivory yellows in strong light. Keep the vestment in a closed garment bag away from daylight.
  • Release creases with light steam held away from the cloth rather than an iron.

FAQs

Before you order

Should I choose a standard size or Made to Measure?

A standard size chosen by height suits most priests. Use the size guide on this page and take the row your height falls in.

Choose Made to Measure if you fall outside those ranges, want a particular hem length, or are buying a gift and know the wearer's measurements. Enter the measurements on this page before adding to cart. Made to Measure is priced the same as Extra Large.

How should I care for an embroidered satin chasuble?

Dry clean only. Tell the cleaner the vestment carries dense metallic and coloured embroidery, so the orphrey must not be pressed flat.

  • Hang the chasuble on a broad padded hanger and never fold it across the embroidered panel.
  • Light colours yellow and deep colours fade in strong light, so keep it in a closed garment bag away from daylight.
  • Release creases with light steam held away from the cloth rather than an iron.
How long will delivery take, and will I pay duties?

Orders are dispatched within 5–7 business days. Standard delivery then takes an estimated 10–15 business days to the United States and up to 21 business days elsewhere; a faster Rush option is offered at checkout.

We pay duties and import taxes on orders to the US, UK and Europe. For other countries, local customs charges may apply on arrival. If you need the chasuble for a particular date, write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering.
