Details

About this habit

This wine habit is built from a heavier wool cloth and closes with a genuine asymmetric wrap rather than a centred front - a dark brown panel crosses the chest on the diagonal, wrapped and held with a thick rope cincture.

01

The cut

Where most of our habits close down the centre, this one wraps: a dark brown panel crosses the chest diagonally from one shoulder toward the opposite hip, giving a genuine wrap front rather than a straight scapular. The back is more conventional, with a plain vertical brown panel running down the centre and a pointed hood, edged in the same brown, rising above it. A thick tan rope cincture wraps twice around the waist and knots at the front, its tasseled ends falling to the knee. Sleeves are wide and bell-shaped, in wine to match the body. There are no pockets; the wrap panel and cincture are the only closure the habit has.

02

Cloth and finish

The cloth is wool, brushed and napped with a visible surface texture, noticeably heavier than the cotton habits in our range, and it falls with more weight and a slower drape. The body is a deep wine, close to burgundy, with the wrap panel and hood trim in a contrasting dark brown.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the wool. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

The wrap closure and heavier wool drape give this habit a more individual character than the plainer tunic-and-scapular cuts elsewhere in our range. It is not tied to one order in character; we describe it as a friar-style habit in its general shape rather than Benedictine or Franciscan specifically. It suits those who want a habit with real weight for colder rooms, and who are drawn to the asymmetric wrap over a centred scapular.

04

Size and fit

We grade to fourteen sizes, each a chest range with a matching robe length: S 34-37 in, M 38-41 in, L 42-45 in, XL 46-49 in, 2XL 50-53 in, in lengths of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62 in measured from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure, our fifteenth option, is priced the same as the L sizes. The habit pulls on over the head, and the wrap panel closes at the front with the cincture.

Read how wool differs from our cotton habits on the fabric guide, check the wrap panel's placement against the measuring guide, and see the rest of the wool habits in religious habits, or commission a custom vestment in wool to your own measurements.

Care

Wool needs gentler handling than cotton: hand wash in cool water or use a wool cycle, and never wring the fabric.

Dry flat, reshaping the wrap panel while damp, and air the habit between wears rather than washing it every time.

Avoid direct heat when ironing; a cool iron with a cloth between it and the wool protects the brushed surface.

FAQs

Before you order

How does the asymmetric wrap front close?

A dark brown panel crosses the chest diagonally from one shoulder toward the opposite hip and is held by the rope cincture, which wraps twice around the waist and ties at the front. It is not a centred, straight-down closure like our scapular habits - the wrap sits at an angle across the body.

Is this habit heavier than your cotton habits?

Yes. It is made from wool with a brushed, napped surface, noticeably heavier and slower-draping than the cotton habits in our range. It suits colder rooms or seasons better than a lighter cotton tunic would.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
