Details

About this habit

Cut from a coarse, visibly slubbed cloth, this grey habit trades the usual torso-length scapular for a rounded capelet that circles the shoulders, topped by a pointed hood and gathered at the waist with an ivory rope cincture.

01

The cut

Rather than a front-and-back scapular panel reaching to mid-calf, this habit uses a true capelet: a rounded cape that sits over the shoulders and drapes evenly all the way round, front and back alike. A pointed hood rises above it, attached at the neckline. The rope cincture is ivory, twisted rather than braided, tied at the front with both ends finished in a knot and a hanging tassel that falls past the knee. Sleeve cuffs and the capelet's outer edge are left with a raw, frayed finish rather than a hemmed edge, which reads as deliberate rather than unravelled. Sleeves are wide and bell-shaped, the hem is a single floor-length line with no tiering, and the habit pulls on over the head with no front closure.

02

Cloth and finish

This is a cotton habit, but a coarser weave than most in our range - the surface is slubbed and visibly textured, closer to linen in hand even though the cloth is cotton, and it takes the light unevenly rather than lying flat and smooth. Colour is a light-to-medium heather grey across tunic, capelet and hood alike.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the cotton. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

A rounded capelet in place of a long scapular is closer to Franciscan in character than to the Benedictine three-panel cut; that describes the shape only, and we make no claim that any friary wears this particular habit. It suits friars, oblates, novices and lay people who want a habit for a simpler rule, and the raw-edge finish gives it a plainer, working character than a habit turned and pressed at every seam.

04

Size and fit

Fourteen graded sizes pair a chest measurement with a finished robe length: S 34-37 in, M 38-41 in, L 42-45 in, XL 46-49 in, 2XL 50-53 in, in robe lengths of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62 in from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure is the fifteenth option, priced the same as the L sizes. The habit pulls on over the head, with no front fastening.

Read about the raw-edge finish on our fabric guide, check your own chest and length against the measuring guide before choosing a size code, and see the full range of hooded habits in religious habits, or order a custom vestment to your own measurements.

Care

Hand wash or use a gentle machine cycle, since the raw, frayed edges at the cuffs and capelet are a finished detail and can fray further with rough handling.

Reshape the capelet while damp and hang to dry.

Iron on a low setting; the coarse weave marks less with heat than a smoother cloth would.

FAQs

Before you order

How is the capelet different from a scapular?

A scapular is a long panel that hangs down the front and back of the torso; a capelet is shorter and rounder, sitting over the shoulders and draping evenly all the way round rather than hanging as two flat panels. This habit uses the capelet, not a scapular.

Is the raw edge at the cuffs and capelet a fault?

No, it is a finished detail. The cuffs and the capelet's outer edge are left unhemmed on purpose, giving a plainer, more textured line than a folded and stitched edge. It will not unravel further with normal wear and gentle washing.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
