A seven-light altar candelabra in gold-tone metal, built around a central cross with lily and vine scrollwork spreading to either side. It stands 12 in high and 13.6 in across, and takes seven candles in a stepped arc.
The design
A budded cross rises at the centre, set with small red stones at the arms and crossing. Out of it grows open scrollwork of lilies and leaves, each stem carrying a candle cup, so the seven lights step up towards the cross rather than standing in a flat row. Two enamelled medallions in red, white and blue are set into the swell of the base, above a chased, stepped foot.
Measurements
12 in (30.5 cm) high and 13.6 in (34.5 cm) wide overall, weighing 617 g. The seven cups are sized for standard church candles.
Where it stands
Seven-light stands of this kind are used on or beside the altar, on a credence or a side table, and in the sanctuary of Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches. A pair either side of the tabernacle is the usual arrangement where two are used. The lily is a Marian sign, so it also suits a Lady altar or a shrine.
