Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

This rose pink stole is built from a striped panel, a pale pink centre bordered in white piping and flanked by deeper rose stripes, embroidered with a small silver cross near the neckline, a winding silver ribbon trail set with stars, and repeating clusters of deep rose and pale pink roses.

01

Design and symbolism

Where the companion rose stole in this collection runs a single rose vine on a plain ground, this one is built as a striped panel: a paler centre stripe edged in white piping between two deeper rose side stripes. A small silver cross sits near the top of each panel, followed by a silver ribbon that winds down the length carrying a scattering of stars, with rose clusters spaced along the same path. Silver, rather than gold, is used throughout, including the fringe, which gives the piece a cooler, more decorative finish than a gold-worked rose stole.

02

Liturgical use

Rose is worn on only two Sundays: Gaudete Sunday in Advent and Laetare Sunday in Lent. On every other day of those seasons, violet is the correct colour, and some traditions omit rose altogether. This stole is not a substitute for a violet Advent or Lent set; it is made for these two specific Sundays.

03

Who it is for

A pastor or priest who marks Gaudete and Laetare Sunday and prefers a silver-and-rose palette to a gold one. Its decorative, striped construction and star motif also make it a considered gift for a woman in pastoral ministry, though the design is not restricted to any one wearer.

04

Length and fit

Standard length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders and worn straight down in the presbyteral cut. Made-to-measure lengths from 84 in to 120 in cost the same as standard, and beyond 120 in, up to 160 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in. Enter your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, which you can adjust. The length, height and any notes you provide carry through to your cart, checkout and order.

Compare it with the gold-cross design in Rose Vestments, browse Lent Vestments, or read the fabric guide for more on striped and colour-blocked panels.

Care

Dry clean only. The pale centre stripe and white piping mark more easily than the darker rose stripes, so handle with clean, dry hands and store the stole rolled rather than folded.

Keep it out of direct sunlight, and press from the reverse only, keeping the iron away from the silver bead fringe.

FAQs

Before you order

Is this stole made specifically for a woman pastor?

The design and motifs are not gendered, and it is worn by any pastor or priest who prefers this silver-and-rose palette. It is often chosen as a gift for a woman entering or serving in pastoral ministry, but nothing about the piece restricts it to one wearer.

How is this different from your gold-cross rose stole?

This piece has a striped, colour-blocked ground with white piping, a silver cross and silver fringe, and a star-and-ribbon trail running down each panel. The companion gold-cross rose stole has a plain rose satin ground with a single rose vine and a radiant gold cross set within it.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
