Overview

What this piece is

A red satin dalmatic with gold orphrey bands, the descending dove worked in gold at the breast and a gold flame on the matching deacon's stole. Nine sizes, S to 6XL.

Symbolism

The dove descending is the Spirit at the Jordan; the flame is the Spirit at Pentecost. Red carries both fire and blood, which is why it appears at opposite ends of the year: at Pentecost and Confirmation, and again on Palm Sunday, Good Friday and the feasts of the martyrs.

Details

About this vestment

Custom and made to measure

A red satin dalmatic with gold orphrey bands, the descending dove of the Holy Spirit worked in gold at the breast and a gold flame at the end of the matching deacon's stole. Cut by The Clergy Couture in nine sizes from S to 6XL.

01

The design

The dove is shown descending, wings spread, in gold thread at the centre of the breast, and the stole carries a single gold flame at its falling end. The two signs belong together: the Spirit came down as a dove at the Jordan and as tongues of fire at Pentecost, and the garment carries both. Gold clavi run the length of the front and back, edged with a narrow gold line.

02

Cloth and finish

Deep red satin rather than a bright scarlet, with gold banding applied so it stands slightly proud of the ground cloth. Red is the hardest liturgical colour to photograph and the easiest to get wrong in cloth; this one is held to a cardinal depth that holds its colour under warm chancel lighting. Wide open sleeves finished flat, with side slits from the hem.

03

Size

Nine sizes, S to 6XL, measured flat across the finished garment: 28 in across the chest and 50 in long at S, 42 in and 60 in at 6XL. Because the figures are flat, double the chest width for the full circumference. A dalmatic hangs over an alb rather than fitting the body, so allow for what you wear underneath and take the larger size if you fall between two.

04

When it is worn

Red is worn at Pentecost and at Confirmation, for the fire of the Spirit; and on Palm Sunday and Good Friday, on feasts of the Lord's Passion and on the feasts of the apostles, evangelists and martyrs, for blood. A red set earns its keep across the year in a way a rose or a black one does not.

05

What you receive

The dalmatic and its matching deacon's stole. The alb worn underneath is not included.

Care

Dry clean only. Satin, gold banding and metal-thread embroidery all suffer in a domestic wash, and red is the colour most likely to bleed onto anything washed with it.

Hang the dalmatic full length on a broad-shouldered hanger between services rather than folding it, and press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never over the dove. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled.

FAQs

Before you order

Which size should I choose?

Size by the garment, not by your chest. Every figure in the size guide is taken flat across the finished dalmatic, so a size S measures 28 in from underarm to underarm laid flat, which is 56 in all the way round.

The two figures that decide it are the total length, which runs from 50 in at S to 60 in at 6XL, and the chest width. Remember the dalmatic goes over an alb or a cassock, so allow for what you wear underneath, and if you fall between two sizes take the larger.

Is the matching stole included?

Yes. The deacon's stole shown in the photographs is made in the same cloth and trim and ships with the dalmatic at no extra charge. It is worn over the left shoulder and fastened at the right hip, which is the deacon's placement rather than the priest's.

The alb worn underneath is not included. If you need one made to match, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Who wears a dalmatic?

The dalmatic is the proper eucharistic vestment of the deacon, worn over the alb and the deacon's stole. A bishop may also wear one beneath the chasuble at a solemn pontifical celebration.

In Lutheran, Methodist and other Protestant traditions the same garment is worn more broadly by pastors and ministers as a liturgical robe. Practice varies between traditions; where your own use differs, follow your ordinary.

Can it be made to match our chasubles?

Yes, a matching set is a matter of asking. Send a photograph of the chasuble you want it to sit beside, or the cloth and orphrey you want matched, and we will confirm the details with you by email.

Two dalmatics in the same cloth, for a deacon and a subdeacon, can be supplied as a matching pair. Write to support@theclergycouture.com with what you need.

How should the dalmatic be cared for?

Dry clean only. Satin and metallic orphrey banding both suffer in a domestic wash, and the bands will pull away from the ground cloth if they are spun.

Hang the dalmatic full length on a broad-shouldered hanger between services rather than folding it, press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, and keep the iron off the embroidery and the banding. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled so no crease sets across it.

How long will it take to arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 5 to 7 days, with a further 10 to 15 days for delivery after dispatch, so allow three weeks or a little more from order to delivery.

If you need it for a particular ordination or feast, say the date in the notes at checkout or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering and we will tell you honestly whether it can be met.
