Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

Purple stole, satin-to-matte finish, with a grey and burgundy thorn vine and a single silver nail embroidered down each panel. For Lenten Sundays and Holy Week, in a narrow, minimalist cut with no fringe.

Symbolism

The running thorn vine stands for the crown of thorns pressed onto Christ before the crucifixion, and the single nail crossing it recalls the nails of the cross. Both are read together as instruments of the Passion, fitting for the penitential weeks of Lent.

Details

About this stole

This is a Lenten stole in solid purple cloth, cut narrower and more minimalist than most of our stoles. Each panel carries a thorny vine embroidered in grey and burgundy thread the full length, one silver-grey nail crossing it partway down, and a small purple-and-red flower near the hem.

01

Design and symbolism

The cloth has a smooth, satin-to-matte finish rather than a raised velvet pile, with no fringe or contrast trim - just a plain purple V yoke and straight ends. The design is restrained by choice: one running thorn vine and one nail per panel, rather than a woven wreath or a fuller Passion cycle.

The thorn vine stands for the crown pressed onto Christ before the crucifixion, and the nail crossing it recalls the nails of the cross itself. Together they are read as instruments of the Passion, which is why they belong to Lent's penitential weeks rather than to a festive season.

02

Liturgical use

Violet is the colour of Lent from Ash Wednesday onward, and of Advent in most Western traditions, though the two seasons carry different tones - penitential in Lent, watchful in Advent. This stole's Passion imagery points it toward Lent and Holy Week specifically rather than Advent. Practice on Good Friday itself varies: many parishes keep violet through the day, some move to black, and some use red for the liturgy of the Passion - check your own tradition before assuming.

03

Who it is for

A priest, pastor or minister who wants a modern, understated stole for the Lenten Sundays and for Good Friday, without the heavier goldwork and fringe of a more traditional Passiontide vestment. The narrower cut and clean ends suit a minimalist worship space as easily as a more traditional one.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured over both shoulders, with any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in priced the same as standard. Beyond 120 in, $10 is added for each further 5 in, up to 160 in. Give your height on the product page for a suggested length, or enter your own - the figure you use travels through to your cart, checkout and order.

Press from the reverse side on a low setting; the embroidery is fine linework, so keep the iron moving rather than resting on any one spot.

FAQs

Before you order

Is this stole made of velvet?

No. The cloth has a smooth, satin-to-matte finish rather than a raised velvet pile.

If a velvet finish specifically matters to you, write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering and we will answer any question about the cloth.

Can this be worn for Good Friday as well as Lent?

Yes, in most parishes. Violet covers Lent generally, and many congregations keep violet through Good Friday itself as part of that same season.

Practice varies: some parishes move to black for Good Friday, and some use red for the liturgy of the Passion specifically, so check your own tradition if you are buying this stole with Good Friday in mind.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
