Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Buying as a gift? Give us the wearer's height and we will size it from the chart.

Overview

What this piece is

Navy clergy stole with an all-gold column of alternating eight-point stars and small crosses down each panel.

For Advent in traditions that keep blue rather than violet.

Symbolism

The eight-point star recalls the star of Bethlehem and the watching that Advent keeps before it. The small crosses set between the stars anchor that hope in the cross of Christ.

Details

About this stole

This navy stole runs an unbroken column of gold eight-point stars alternating with small pointed crosses down each panel, worked entirely in gold thread against a deep blue ground. It is designed for congregations that keep Advent in blue rather than violet.

01

Design and symbolism

The ground is a navy satin-faced cloth with a subtle tone-on-tone damask self-pattern, bordered in gold metallic piping along both long edges. A single gold-embroidered column runs the full length of each panel, alternating large eight-point stars with small pointed crosses and linking them with fine gold rays. The back neck triangle is navy with one further gold star at its point, and both hems finish in gold twisted fringe. No other colour is used; the whole scheme is gold on navy.

The star recalls the star of Bethlehem and, by extension, the watching and waiting that Advent asks for: a light looked for before it arrives. The small crosses set between the stars keep that hope tied to the cross of Christ rather than leaving it as a general symbol of light alone.

02

Liturgical use

Blue is not a colour of the Roman rite. Sarum-tradition Anglican parishes, and some Lutheran and other Protestant congregations, use a blue often called Sarum blue or Advent blue for the Advent season, keeping it distinct from the violet used in Lent. Roman Catholic parishes, and many others that follow Roman use, keep violet for Advent instead. If your tradition does not use blue for Advent, choose one of our violet Advent stoles rather than this one.

Where blue is used, it belongs to Advent. The star motif also nods toward Epiphany, but Epiphany itself is customarily kept in white and gold in most traditions, so this navy piece is best reserved for the four Sundays before Christmas rather than for the Feast of the Epiphany.

03

Who it is for

A priest, pastor or minister in a Sarum-use Anglican parish, or any congregation that has adopted blue for Advent, is the intended wearer. It also works as a gift for a minister who wants a stole outside the more common violet, provided their tradition supports the choice.

04

Length and fit

The standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured over both shoulders from end to end. A made-to-measure length anywhere from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard, and a longer figure, up to 160 in, adds $10 for each further 5 in beyond 120. Tell us your height on the product page and it will suggest a length for you to accept or change; whichever figure you settle on, along with your height and any notes, is carried through to your cart and your final order.

See our other Advent vestments and blue vestments, and read the liturgical colour guide for a fuller account of where blue is and is not used through the church year.

Store rolled rather than folded to keep the star-and-cross column free of crease lines, and press from the reverse to protect the all-gold embroidery.

FAQs

Before you order

Is blue an appropriate Advent colour in every tradition?

No, and it is worth checking before you order. Blue for Advent, sometimes called Sarum blue or Advent blue, is used in some Anglican parishes and by some Lutheran and other Protestant congregations. Roman Catholic parishes, and many others following Roman use, keep violet for Advent instead.

If your own tradition does not use blue, choose one of our violet Advent designs rather than this navy stole.

Does this stole suit Epiphany as well as Advent?

The star motif nods toward Epiphany, but the customary colour for the Feast of the Epiphany itself is white and gold in most traditions, not blue. This stole is intended for Advent; for the Feast of the Epiphany, look to one of our white and gold designs instead.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
