Details

About this cassock

A navy blue cassock robe with a stand collar and a matching sash belt finished with a hanging tassel, offered in your size code or tailored to your own measurements.

01

The cut

The robe runs in a clean line from the stand collar to the hem and closes down the centre front. Sleeves are long and straight, finishing at the wrist without a turned cuff. A sash in the same navy cloth wraps the natural waist and ties at one side, its tasselled end hanging against the skirt; from the back the sash is carried straight across without gathering. The skirt is cut with enough fullness to walk and climb chancel steps in, and the hem is set to clear the shoe. No hood, no scapular, no applied trim.

02

Cloth and finish

Made in cotton with a matte face. Navy is the most useful alternative to black for clergy who find black severe: it reads as dark and formal at a distance but keeps a little warmth close up, and it photographs better than black under the mixed lighting of a modern worship space. The colour is unbroken from collar to hem, sash included.

03

Robe only, or robe and stole

The Style dropdown decides what ships. Robe Only is the cassock and its sash belt. Robe + Stole adds a matching stole made in the same cloth and finished by the same hand, and adds $80 at every size code. Both are cut to the size you choose.

04

Who wears it

A plain navy cassock carries no seasonal or denominational claim, which makes it a working robe rather than a seasonal one: Sunday preaching, weekday services, weddings, funerals, hospital and school visits. Navy is also the common choice for Advent in congregations that follow Sarum use but want something less formal than a full blue vestment. It suits priests, pastors, ministers and seminarians.

05

Size and fit

The robe is cut to fourteen graded size codes, each pairing a chest measurement with a finished length. S covers a 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in and 2XL 50-53in; the number after the letter is the robe length in inches from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure is priced at the same step as the L sizes and cut to your own figures.

Care

Dry cleaning is the safest route. If you would rather launder the robe at home, use a gentle cool cycle and line dry out of direct sun, which fades navy faster than most people expect.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and hang the robe full length on a broad-shouldered hanger between services. Store the sash loosely rolled so the tassel does not crush.

FAQs

Before you order

What is the difference between Robe Only and Robe + Stole?

Robe Only is the robe by itself, with whatever belt, sash or cincture is listed in the specifications for that robe. Robe + Stole adds the matching stole shown in the photographs, cut and finished to the same cloth and trim as the robe, and adds $80 to the price at every size code.

The choice is made in the Style dropdown on this page and the price updates as soon as you change it. If you already own a stole in the right liturgical colour, Robe Only is the sensible choice; if you want the two pieces matched by the same hand in the same cloth, take the pair.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears chancel steps more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How does the cassock robe fasten, and what is worn under it?

The robe fastens down the front, and the specifications on this page say whether that is a button placket or a concealed closure. It is cut with ease so it hangs cleanly over an ordinary shirt and clergy collar, or over a clergy shirt, without pulling across the chest when you raise your arms to preach.

Where a belt, sash or cincture is included it ties or buckles at the natural waist. A stole is worn over the robe, not under it, and goes on last.

How should the robe be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning, and it is the only sensible route for any robe with embroidery or metallic trim. Hang the robe full length on a broad-shouldered hanger between services rather than folding it, so no crease sets across the skirt.

Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth, never directly over embroidery or braid, and keep coloured robes out of direct sunlight in storage. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.

How long will my robe take to arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 5 to 7 days, and delivery takes a further 10 to 15 days after dispatch. Choosing Robe + Stole does not change the dispatch time.

If you are ordering for a specific ordination, installation or feast day, tell us the date in the order notes and we will confirm by email whether it can be met.
