Overview
What this piece is
Burgundy velvet stole, matching front and back, embroidered with a Luther Rose medallion, grapevine, VDMA banner and a Chi Rho flanked by Alpha and Omega. For Reformation Sunday, Lutheran ordinations and confirmation.
Symbolism
The Luther Rose - a white rose, red heart and black cross - is Martin Luther's own seal and the standard emblem of Lutheran identity. VDMA abbreviates Verbum Domini Manet in Aeternum, 'the Word of the Lord endures forever,' the Reformation's watchword. The Chi Rho with Alpha and Omega beneath ties the design back to Christ as beginning and end.

Details
About this stole
This pastor's stole is cut from burgundy velvet-look cloth, the same on both faces, with no separate lining panel. Each panel carries, top to bottom, a circular Luther Rose medallion, a grapevine with grape clusters, a VDMA scroll banner, and a Chi Rho flanked by Alpha and Omega near the fringe.
Design and symbolism
Unlike most of our velvet stoles, the reverse here is the same burgundy velvet as the front rather than a contrasting gold satin, so the whole piece reads as one fabric from any angle. The design has no separate trim or border; the embroidery alone carries the panel, self-edged, finishing in gold fringe.
The Luther Rose - a white rose, a red heart at its centre, and a black cross within the heart - is Martin Luther's own seal and remains the standard emblem of Lutheran identity. VDMA abbreviates Verbum Domini Manet in Aeternum, 'the Word of the Lord endures forever,' the watchword of the Reformation. The grapevine below points to the wine of the Eucharist, and the Chi Rho with Alpha and Omega closes the sequence by naming Christ as beginning and end.
Liturgical use
Red suits this stole's Reformation and ordination associations well: Reformation Sunday, Pentecost, and ordination or installation services where the tradition calls for red rather than for a more general festive white. It is not built for Lent or Ordinary Time, and the Luther Rose specifically marks it as a Lutheran piece rather than a general-purpose red stole.
Who it is for
A Lutheran pastor or minister, for Reformation Sunday, an ordination, a confirmation class, or as a considered gift marking installation in a call. Clergy outside the Lutheran tradition should note that the Luther Rose is a specific denominational emblem, not a generic Christian symbol, before choosing this design as a gift for someone outside that church.
Length and fit
Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over both shoulders; any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in is priced the same as standard, and $10 is added for every further 5 in beyond that, up to 160 in. The height box on the product page suggests a length once you enter your height, which you can change - the figure carries through to your cart, checkout and order.
