Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Buying as a gift? Give us the wearer's height and we will size it from the chart.

Details

About this stole

This ivory stole carries a running vine of lilies and eight-point stars down each panel, gathered near the hem into a small gold crown. It is designed for the white and gold season: Easter, Christmastide and Epiphany.

01

Design and symbolism

The ground is an ivory satin-faced cloth with a fine self-tone lattice woven into the cloth itself, so the surface catches light without any applied print. Gold and silver metallic piping runs along both long edges. Down each panel a vine of white and silver lily flowers with gold leaves climbs from hem to shoulder, with small gold eight-point stars set between the blooms. Near the base of each panel the vine gathers into a gold crown worked with small red accents. The back neck forms a V, ivory, with a single gold star at the point. Both hems finish in a champagne-silver twisted fringe.

The lily is the flower of Easter: its white trumpet has stood for purity and for the Resurrection since the early church took up the garden imagery of the empty tomb. The eight-point star, an old Epiphany sign, points toward the star that led the magi. The crown gathered at the base of the vine reads as Christ's kingship, the crown of glory that Easter proclaims after the crown of thorns of Good Friday.

02

Liturgical use

White and gold is the class for the church's greatest joys: Easter Day and the whole of Eastertide, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Epiphany, and other high feasts of the Lord. It is not worn for Lent or Advent, where the western tradition calls for violet, nor for the long run of Ordinary Time, where green is customary. Practice on the exact boundary days varies by parish and by tradition, so a minister new to a congregation should check local custom before the first use.

03

Who it is for

This is a presbyteral stole, cut for a priest, pastor or minister presiding at the altar or pulpit on a festal Sunday. Its combination of lily, star and crown makes it equally suited to an Easter sunrise service, a Christmas Eve vigil or an Epiphany procession, so a minister who wants one stole to carry the whole white season, rather than three separate pieces, is the person this design is made for.

04

Length and fit

The stole is finished at a standard 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over both shoulders, which suits most adult wearers with room for the drape. Any length from 84 in to 120 in is made at the same price. Beyond 120 in, $10 is added for each further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter a height on the product page and the form will suggest a length; you are free to override it with your own measurement, and whatever you enter travels through to your cart and order.

06

Care

Dry clean only. The pale ivory ground marks more readily than a coloured cloth, so handle with clean, dry hands and keep it away from cosmetics and pens.

Store rolled rather than folded to protect the damask lattice and the metallic embroidery, keep it out of direct sunlight, and press from the reverse under a cloth, avoiding the embroidered vine and the fringe.

FAQs

Before you order

Does the back of this stole match the ivory front?

The reverse of the panels has a warmer, champagne tone compared with the ivory face. That's typical of a satin weave, where the face and the back of the cloth catch the light differently rather than being dyed to two different shades.

If an exact colour match front and back matters to your order, write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering and we will answer any question about the cloth.

Can I wear this stole at Christmas as well as Easter?

Yes. This design was made for the whole white and gold season, not for Easter alone. The lily and crown suit Easter and the Sundays of Eastertide that follow it, the eight-point star suits Epiphany, and the ivory and gold palette sits equally well on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

It is not intended for Lent or Advent, when violet is the customary colour in most western traditions.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
